The 19th-ranked Raiders rallied for a 5-2 victory against Notre Dame de Namur, then evened their season record at 9-9 with a 4-0 triumph against Dominican University. Winners of seven of its past nine contests, Southern used a five-run sixth inning rally to avenge Saturday's loss to the Argonauts. Senior all-star Kara Ray tied Game 1 with a two-run single, and juniors Leann Foster and Kim Kraxberger followed up with RBI hits of their own. Senior all-star Miranda Gillaspie allowed only four hits and struck out three to notch her fourth win of the season. Game 2 featured a brilliant one-hit, 10-strikeout, no-walk pitching performance by junior Julianne Cree, who registered her fourth season triumph. Ray delivered an RBI double in the third frame, and freshman Alicia Caudill had a pinch-hit, run-scoring single in the seventh. Ray spearheaded SOU's 13-hit attack in the two games by going 3-for-6, while Kraxberger and senior Seanna Doyel had two apiece. "We played loose and made some things happen at the plate," Raider coach Larry Binney said. "We starting to feel really good about ourselves as a team. We all feel like things are starting to come to together." The Raiders cap the California road trip today with doubleheaders against Patten and Bethany. Track and Field At Eugene, freshman pole vaulter Robbie Johnston was at it again, breaking the Southern Oregon University record twice and eclipsing 17 feet for the first time Saturday. Johnston, who has set the standard five times this season, cleared 17-3 in windy conditions at the Oregon Preview meet at Hayward Field. "It was very significant, him getting through that barrier," said SOU coach Mike Jones. "It really was a great day for him. He's a very talented athlete." Johnston first set the school mark at 16-7 at an indoor meet in Reno, Nev. On Saturday, he went 17-0 to break the record, then went 17-3 to set it again. He made one attempt at 17-6 before calling it a day. Johnston, an Eagle Point graduate, won the Class 4A state title last year at Hayward Field with a mark of 15-9. The pole vaulters contended with a tail wind, which is better for them than wind from the front or side. Oregon's Jon Derby, one of five current or former NCAA Division I vaulters in the field, was second at 16-6 3/4 . Ryan Mussleman of SOU was seventh. His season-best height of 15-7 automatically qualifies him for the national meet. Raider Nick Hansen won the triple jump at 45-4 1/4, and Kento Kawamura and Jeremiah Lewman had strong efforts in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Kawamura was second in 55.75 and Lewman third in 55.93. Kawamura and Lewman joined Adam Machado and Jasen Hartford on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays that placed second and third, respectively. The short relay time was 43.51, and the long relay mark was 3:31.77. Hartford placed in the top four with season bests of 10.8 in the 100 (fourth) and 22.20 in the 200 (third). Nate Chambers posted a fifth-place effort in the shot put (45-3 1/2), but teammate Scott Myers, one of the nation's best, injured himself on his first throw. Myers caught his foot in the ring and twisted his leg, resulting in what is believed to be a high ankle sprain. On the women's side, the Raiders' 4x100 team of Jolaina Peltier, Emily Dunn, Ashley Black and Rachel Hinze clocked 50.15, placing second. Dunn also had a season-best 13.06 in the 100. SOU assistant coach Jeremy Senn, competing unattached, won the men's 100 with a wind-aided, hand-timed mark of 10.3.
