(This article has been updated to correct the spelling of Stearns' name.) The center has been funded by student fees since it first opened its doors 27 years ago, but the Educational Activities Advisory Committee decided on Feb. 17 by a unanimous 6-0 vote to defund the center and instead offer subsidies to students who require daycare. Since its funding will no longer come from SOU, the center will accept customers — students and non-students alike — on a first-come, first-serve basis. “It’s quite a big change,” Stearns said. “Some of the staff are thrilled about it because before they didn't work throughout the summer. Now, there’s the opportunity to be enrolled year-round.” Since the center is now catering to working families, says Stearns, they won’t wait until school begins in late September to open. Instead, SCC opened for business on Tuesday. Also, it will only close for holidays, not school-related vacations such as winter and spring break. SOU classes begin Sept. 29. On Friday, Stearns and her staff were scrambling to get the center ready for its earliest-ever first day. “I’m thoroughly missing those extra three weeks,” she said. “We’re busy, but we’re excited about it.” SCC, located in the main building of the school’s family housing complex, Old Mill Village (1361 Quincy St.,), is licensed to care for as many as 58 children at a time, from as young as six weeks up to 6 years old. As of Friday, its toddler center was full and its infant center was close to full, but there were still plenty of spots available in its preschool department. The center’s rates can be found online at souchildcare.com . Parents can also fill out an application online. According to the EAAC, any student who meets the subsidy program’s eligibility requirements may receive $400 per month for the nine-month school year. According to the committee, the move was a response to the center’s inability to meet its budget. In a letter to the Student Fees Committee dated Feb. 17, the EAAC stated: “Since 2010, the Schneider Child Care Center has operated in a deficit, with 2012 being the exception. The deficits ranged from .06 (percent) to 12.5 (percent), demonstrating the instability of this program and the need to restructure.” SCC employs two full-time teachers, nine teachers in all and usually carries a host of volunteer aids and practicum students from the university.
