The Jackson County Narcotics Enforcement Team found about 50 charred and burned marijuana plants, grow lights and an irrigation system inside the garage at 3325 Hwy. 66, officials said. It appeared marijuana had been grown in the garage, which JACNET officials described as a barn, for some time. They did not elaborate. “I guess my buddy had a marijuana garden growing in there and he sort of maxed out the electricity,” said Matt Adolphson, 33, who had been staying at the house. He said law enforcement officials confiscated only about 20 marijuana plants. JACNET served a search warrant on the site on Saturday morning. No arrests had been in connection with the bust, and JACNET officials have not named any suspects or the charges that might be filed. Law enforcement officials did not return calls. Authorities believe this barn, burned in a fire Friday , was being used to grow marijuana. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Firefighters responded to the blaze around 7:30 p.m. Friday when two fire chiefs who live in the area spotted the structure fire. Fire investigators from Jackson County Fire District 5 believe the cause of the blaze was an overloaded electrical circuit, officials reported Monday. Mark Griffiths, 34, one of the residents, said Friday night that the building was used as a garage, storage and woodshop. The fire destroyed bicycles, snowboards, skis, kayaks, Griffiths’ woodworking tools and an old pickup truck the landlord’s father had stored on the property. On Friday he also said there were “supplies” in the building, but did not offer any more description. “I’m kind of a pack rat,” he said. Griffiths rented the property almost a mile off of they highway on a country road and at least two other men also lived at the residence. One of the men had two young daughters, according to a neighbor. “We had no clue,” said the neighbor, who estimated Griffiths had lived in the house for a couple of years. “He was a nice guy ... very friendly.” Staff writer Jennifer Squires can be reached at 482-3456 x 225 or [email protected].
