ELECTION Sheriff a no-show at Ashland Chamber forum Forum will still be televised, with Falls as the lone participant By Ryan Pfeil for the Tidings DailyTidings.com By Ryan Pfeil for the Tidings Posted Sep. 25, 2014 @ 3:46 pm By Ryan Pfeil for the Tidings Posted Sep. 25, 2014 @ 3:46 pm » Social News ASHLAND — The Ashland Chamber of Commerce will soon release a video showing the candidates for Jackson County sheriff taking part in a question-and-answer session, but viewers won't see incumbent Sheriff Mike Winters taking part in the discussion.  Winters did not show up for the forum, and chamber officials were unable to reach him to determine why.  A post on the Facebook page of challenger Corey Falls announced the absence.  "He did not call or leave a reason for his absence," the post reads. "We did the forum anyway, and the Ashland Chamber will still broadcast it."  Falls, deputy chief for the Ashland Police Department, said his post was intended to make voters aware of the absence before they watched.  Calls to Winters were not returned. Chamber officials said both candidates had confirmed their attendance at the forum earlier this week.  The Ashland Chamber of Commerce releases similar forum videos every election. Candidates for sheriff, state senator, state representative and city council are all interviewed by a forum moderator. Candidates see questions prior to the taping.  The forums are closed to the public but are recorded at Rogue Valley Television. Starting Oct. 1, they will be broadcast on channels 9 and 14, and will be available to watch on the Chamber's website, www.ashlandchamber.com.  "We run them all the way through election day, (Nov. 4)" said Sandra Slattery, Chamber executive director. "They're, of course, very business- and community-focused."  Questions include why candidates are running, their specific skill sets, the biggest challenges their department or position faces, and the top three issues facing Jackson County.  "To my knowledge, no one else is doing this," Slattery said, adding the Chamber has consistently received positive feedback on the forums.  "It really gives people a chance to listen. They're fascinating to watch and listen to the respondents." Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected].
