Small Mt. Hood quakes recorded PORTLAND (AP) - A swarm of small earthquakes were recorded under Mount Hood during the past week and a half without anybody feeling a thing. Instruments around the volcano detected 17 quakes during the period, all too small to cause any damage or be felt by skiers or snowboarders enjoying the slopes of the state's highest peak. The largest quake, at magnitude 2.0, occurred Friday. The mountain was quiet this weekend. Scientists who monitor the 11,240-foot volcano say that occasional quake swarms are not a sign of an impending eruption. "We'd be concerned about an increasing number of earthquakes, and we'll continue to keep an eye on it," said William E. Scott, scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Wash. "But for right now, it's typical for Mount Hood." The last eruption on Mount Hood occurred about 200 years ago, before the arrival of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The epicenters for most of the earthquakes are southeast of the summit, in the vicinity of the Mount Hood Meadows ski area. Most of the quakes are about 3 1/2 miles below the surface.
