Some of us would like to have more of Lance Pugh and his great humor, his topics to which many readers can relate, his articulation. We enjoy the Ashland Daily Tidings. Edwin D. Haynes Ashland In defense of hope and love Why call our editor of one of our local newspapers a liberal, as if that were a bad thing to be? Is it because Scot manages to report on the hope and love that remains no matter what we do? More reporting on love and hope, that's what I say and if that makes me a liberal, so be it. I am signing with the Libertarian Party. If the word 'libertarian" becomes a threat, will it be labeled as un-Christian, unpatriotic, or other words that turn inside-out with the mere addition of an "un." You Blue Meanie People, lighten up. Jill Iles Talent Talk of unity is false rhetoric During the convention the sheep's clothing came off the wolf. Three days of "moderate conservative" posturing were shoved aside and replaced by mean-spirited attacks against John Kerry. It was full out attack dog politics as usual, with speeches full of the misrepresentations of Kerry's own words and shocking inaccuracies of fact. But the real target of Miller and Cheney's vitriol wasn't just the Democratic candidate - it was anyone who disagrees with them. As Nora O'Connell remarked on MSNBC afterwards, "These Republicans don't want to just win, they want to destroy the opposition." Last time I looked at a poll, that was about half of us. When Bush ran in 2000, he promised to bring us together, to be a president for all Americans. He's saying the same thing again this time around. As the saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." Malcolm Hillgartner Ashland Self-interest a role in terror I think Bush, Sharon, and Gerry Mandell are very, very wrong, and I would assign self-interest as the link to their error. So-called Islamic terror is nothing more than people reacting to what they consider unacceptable transgressions. You can rant and rave and invade and kill to your heart's content. But until you remove your burrs under the Arabs' saddles, some of them are going to react in-kind. I think most rational people would consider it inevitable. Whether Western reality is just the right ticket for Islam is another question, one that isn't ours to answer. Tom Marvin Ashland Tidings drops key Kerry quote "The election comes down to this. If you believe this country is headed in the right direction - support Bush. But if you believe America needs to move in a new direction, join with us." That's what John Kerry said to a cheering crowd in Springfield, Iowa, just minutes after GW gave his pep talk at Madison Square Garden. This is indeed the crux of the election, although the Tidings didn't find space to report it the next day. Nor did the networks do better - except for C-Span, which also covered the gatherings of over 500,000 New Yorkers who heartily agreed with John Kerry. For those of us who live in the real world, only C-Span offers the kind of uninterrupted coverage that is the duty of a responsible media outlet. Republicans have driven America to the verge of catastrophe. It's time to clear them out, and repair the damage. Nan Trout Ashland Bates listens, and is listened to I urge voters to support Dr. Alan Bates in his state Senate race. His availability to his constituents has moved me, as I frequently speak with area residents who say such things about him as "he returned my call personally!" His integrity is exemplified by his voting record, which documents that he voted as he thought best, not as instructed by party politics. Most important for the current race, he is able to represent us fully and capably from his first day as a senator as he is experienced and knows "the lay of the land." I have observed first hand in Salem that when Rep. Bates speaks people listen, and when people speak to him he does the same. Please support Dr. Bates for state Senator.
