She was born January 27, 1918 to Luella (Grubb) and Henry Carter in Ashland, Ore. The Carter family were early pioneers in Ashland, and a prominent family in local community activities. The statue of "Iron Mike" in the Plaza is in honor of her great-grandfather, Carter. In 2005, Esther was Grand Marshall of the Ashland 4th of July parade, in honor of her ancestors. Esther grew up in Ashland, graduated from Southern Oregon Normal School (now known as SOU) and taught school for many years in the Rogue Valley. She married Lee Merriman June 4, 1940 who preceded her in death May 3, 2001. Esther's hobbies included writing short stories about growing up in Ashland, painting, and enjoying the many outdoor activities offered in southern Oregon. Esther is survived by her three sons, Lynn Merriman (Debra) and Dan Merriman of Ashland, Ore., and Vance Merriman (Celia) of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Esther's life will be celebrated at a memorial service to be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Ashland First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
