--> --> New tally shows commissioners were off base Parts of this letter and two editorials were sent to Interior Secretary Norton, Senator Smith, Governor Kitzhaber, and Representative Walden and DeFazio. Please consider the contents of the enclosed two editorials from Southern Oregon's newspapers before reaching a decision on the Cascade-Siskiyou Monument. The editorials written by the Medford Mail Tribune (August 5) and the Ashland Daily Tidings (August 14) stated the actions of the Jackson County Commissioners were "disturbing" and did not act in the public's interest. The commissioners wrote Interior Secretary Norton a letter recommending the size of the Cascade-Siskiyou Monument be cut by 2/3 of its original size. In that letter, Commissioners Holt, Walker, and Kupillas did not represent the truth. They said that 84 percent of the people in Jackson County wanted the monument downsized. This is a misrepresentation of the facts. After careful study of the re-count and duplication of signatures, the Medford Mail Tribune reported 56 percent of the county was in favor of maintaining the monument at 52, 947 acres. I was a volunteer that helped with the re-count. After 18 hours of reviewing letters and petitions, I know one thing - the commissioners DID NOT represent the will of the people, but rather their own biased opinions.
