Born Ralph Soloman Neumann on May 22, 1926 to Alexander and Gertrud Neumann in Berlin, Germany, Ralph spent his early years in and around Berlin. During the War, Ralph evaded Nazi capture with the help of many heroic people, most notably Pastor Walter Wendland and his wife, Agnes, who sheltered him for almost a year and a half. He emigrated to the United States in 1946. In 1949 he was joined by his fiancee, Margaret Kirsch, whom he married a week later. The couple lived in New York, where Ralph worked during the day and went to night school, earning his high school degree, then attended City College, majoring in engineering. The family, now with two sons, moved west to New Mexico, where Ralph worked at Los Alamos, and later California, where he continued his engineering career in semiconductor development. Upon retirement, Ralph and Margaret moved to Ashland, Ore. in 1987. Mrs. Neuman died in 1996. After retirement, Ralph Neuman volunteered as an AARP tax aide, and in the AARP Senior Health Insurance program to assist seniors with their Medicare insurance, and delivered Meals on Wheels. Ralph loved gardening, fishing, and singing in the Methodist church choir, even singing at a special event in Carnegie Hall, where he met his wife, Nora. Family was very important to Ralph; as his children left home, he was always able to live close by. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 1, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Ashland, 175 N. Main St., Ashland, OR. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to the First United Methodist Church of Ashland.
