When Australian writer-director-producer George Miller started out in the 1970s, he made his name on gritty action, with “Mad Max” and its sequel, “The Road Warrior,” getting him established. He moved into horror, directing the “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” segment of “Twilight Zone: The Movie,” returned to the Mad Max franchise with “Beyond Thunderdome,” switched to adult fantasy with “The Witches of Eastwick” (in which I can be seen for four seconds as an extra in the rain sequence near the beginning!), tear-jerking drama with “Lorenzo’s Oil,” and kiddie fare with “Babe: Pig in the City” (he produced “Babe”) and both “Happy Feet” animated features. Now he’s back at square one, rebooting “Mad Max,” complete with a whole new story, a new lead actor (Tom Hardy), and all sorts of state-of-the-art action. The low-key, ever-smiling Miller, 70, spoke about the film last week in Hollywood. Q: You’ve got Tom Hardy playing Max in this film, and you’ve paired him up with an initially adversarial female character, played by Charlize Theron. Was her character so independent and strong when the script was being written? A: I reflected on my own life. Growing up I had all brothers, no sisters. I went to an all-boy high school. I went to medical school at a time when very few women were studying medicine. It was only beyond that that I was actually able to really experience women. I also have a very strong mum, and today in the world we’re seeing that women are emerging as perhaps a unifying or healing force. I guess that’s in the zeitgeist, and I guess that kind of crept into the movie. Q: What was your inspiration for making this film, three decades after “Thunderdome?” A: Just to try again, to tell another Mad Max movie. And I got excited about a story that came my way. That was the main inspiration. Q: You certainly captured the spirit of the original films, but managed to make this one feel completely contemporary. A: Well, thank you. We worked so hard to do that. If we’re going to go back into that world, you sure as hell can’t do what you did 30 years ago. But it had to be uniquely familiar, like visiting an old hometown but seeing it through new eyes. Everything had changed in 30 years; the world had changed, cinema had changed, and the technology had changed. So we had an opportunity to sort of blend all of that together. “The Road Warrior” had 1,200 cuts (edits), this one has 2,700 cuts, and it’s not much longer. Cinema is, no question, getting faster, through commercials and music clips, so this is a language we’re speed reading now. Plus it was a chance to go into a much more fully realized world. To be honest, having done pure animations, and before that, talking pig movies, this new digital dispensation was really interesting. Though we did it old school, in terms of the vehicles and the people in the desert, we were also able to do so much more. For instance, you can color the frame. One of the most common uses of CG in this movie was to change the color of the sky or indeed, put a sky in, so you get some consistency. So I would hope I was able to improve on the last movies after 30 years, otherwise I haven’t learned anything. Q: The rumor is that the studio is considering making three more of these. If that happens, would you be directing them? A: If this does well enough and if we’ve got the appetite to go back into the wasteland, we’d give it another shot. But these are very tough movies to make. They’re real world, and because most of it was filmed in Africa, I was away from home. But I do have two more stories, and I’d love to work with Tom again.
