SOU picks architect for library expansion After narrowing down the contracting search to seven finalists, the University's Library Program Design Committee has selected Emerick Construction Company of Portland as the new construction manager/general contractor for the Library Enhancement Project. BLM seeks project proposals Residents with ideas for improving the local environment - from using goats to wipe out flammable vegetation to creating natural pools for fish spawning - could win federal funding to implement beneficial projects. Native Americans end month of celebration For the last month, the Native American Student Union at Southern Oregon University has hosted an array of public events to celebrate Native American Month. As April draws to a close, NASU volunteers end the month of cultural awareness with a sundown ceremony. History students garner awards Oregon's National History Day state level competition was held at Willamette University last weekend, and 32 Southern Oregon middle and high school students took part. Robotics lecture Dr. Nicholas Flann will present a lecture on robotics at Southern Oregon University. Meeting set on LID proposal Early plans for a proposed local improvement district will be presented from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Community Center, 59 Winburn Way. Correction The Lithia Arts Guild of Oregon was misidentified in a story Tuesday on an amphitheater proposal for Calle Guanajuato. Public Safety Ashland Police & Fire Community Notes · OLD FASHIONED VARIETY SHOW to support Waldorf education will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Actors Theater in Talent. The show will feature adults and children from the Waldorf community performing juggling, dancing, music, comedy, drama and animal tricks. Tickets are on a sliding scale between $5-10; money raised goes toward a Waldorf scholarship, to fund two new kindergarten and one new first grade class in Talent, and to defray administrative costs. for more information, call 512-8976. · A.N.S.W.E.R is sponsoring a May Day rally and march at noon Saturday at Triangle Park in Ashland. Hosted by the Southern Oregon affiliate of A.N.S.W.E.R., the theme of the march is "Peace,Labor, Rights and Social Justice." A picnic in Lithia Park will follow. For more information, call 482-6543. · SOUTHERN OREGON LAND CONSERVANCY HIKE will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday on one of the properties they have protected with a conservation easement. John Roach, landowner, will talk about his two-year restoration efforts along the riparian zone on Cheney Creek, near Wilderville in the Applegate Valley. Hikers will also get to see the neighboring 75 acres owned by the BLM, which has completed its restoration work. Participants should bring a picnic lunch and meet at 9 a.m. at the Safeway parking lot in Ashland for carpooling, or at the Wilderville Store, Fish Hatchery Road.
