The Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission at its Aug. 31 meeting postponed a decision that would have recommended issuing a $550,000 bond to replace and expand the aging water feature at Garfield Park in favor coming back with "a more holistic approach" to renovation. The commission decided to look at other areas that could be improved and to examine a bond to cover multiple projects at the park. Possible additions include a shelter for the Cascade Siskiyou Scenic Bikeway (a 55-mile loop for which Garfield Park is the beginning and endpoint), new basketball courts, additional shelters, and improvements to hardscape features. If a bond is recommended by Parks and Rec, it would then pass to the City Council for consideration. All money to cover the bond would come from the parks fund, which is supplied by food and beverage taxes in the city. The Parks & Recreation Commission is slated to discuss the bond at its study session Monday, Sept. 21, starting at 7 p.m. in The Grove, 1195 East Main St. Alec Dickinson is an Ashland freelance writer.
