His conceptualization of our community’s response to these folks as “other” and a “problem that needs to be solved” (although they commit no crimes) feels right on. I have been very uncomfortable with the discussion of people in Ashland who demonize these folks because their presence makes them uncomfortable or they are perceived to threaten their economic interests. There are many other people in our society who could be viewed this way as well. As he said, we simply do not have a right to engage in that judgment. Thanks to him for speaking out. Dear Fossil Fuelers, wherever you are, here's a delightfully wild idea I'd like you to consider: Resign your job as a Fossil Fueler (FF), and train to become a Green Energy Fueler (GEF). Maybe Bill Gates would help you make the transition. No harm in asking him. If you choose to do this, you'd go from being a part of the problem to being crucial to its solution. Thank you for even thinking seriously about changing jobs. Dear the-rest-of-us, I invite you to seriously consider giving up meat one day a week: "91 billion miles would be saved if everyone in the USA ate no meat nor cheese one day a week for a year." We need an alternative to bad news. Consider the article in Tuesday's Dec. 22 Klamath Falls Herald and News at www.heraldandnews.com . The Ella Redkey Pool is geothermal heated. It's the place to relax and soak in during the cold winter months in the Klamath Basin. Title of article alluding to this: "Get in the swim: Redkey remains a draw on snowy days; Geothermal heat keeps swimmers toasty." Check it out. And the next time Ashlanders travel to our Klamath County neighbor 65 miles east of Ashland, consider taking the plunge at the Ella Redkey Pool. James Farmer Ashland Halfway home Ashland is on the right track empowering Lomakatsi Restoration, a local nonprofit, to guide fuel reduction in the watershed. "Catastrophic wildfire" results from suppression of frequent natural fires ignited by summer lightning. Current work helps to remedy past mistakes, but it only gets us halfway home. Ashland must use fire to protect the water supply. We cannot log our way out of the problem.
