The statue was vandalized in October 2014, according to Mike Morrison, public works superintendent. “They climbed up the fountain where the statue stands and broke off his musket,” said Morrison. “It’s happened before and was able to be repaired, but this time it was worse and had to be recast.” The city of Ashland funded the $51,675 project. The original statue was cast in zinc, but the new cast is bronze. “Zinc is brittle and it isn’t used as much anymore,” said Morrison. “Bronze is much sturdier.” The city also restored the fountain base, re-worked the plumbing and addressed rust damage, according to a city news release. Pioneer Mike and the Carter Memorial Fountain were given to the city by the children of H.H. and H.B. Carter in 1910. “He’s been vandalized many times, but this was the longest he’s been taken down,” said Morrison. The rededication ceremony will include a speech by Mayor John Stromberg, music by the Ashland City Band and a dedication and unveiling by the Historic Commission. “Everyone around here (the Public Works Department) is pleased to have him up before our big Fourth of July celebration,” said Morrison.
