The Ashland Tree Commission has been working to bring James Urban here from Annapolis, Md., and is hosting the workshop to provide guidance and recommendations on the Ashland urban forest. After reviewing the current condition and quality of the existing trees, using soil probes, and evaluating what is and what is not working, Urban will present his findings in a public presentation. Urban, a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, is regarded as one of the foremost authorities in the U.S. on urban trees. He has written and lectured extensively on the subjects of soil and urban tree planting, and has been responsible for the introduction of many innovations and current standards relating to urban tree plantings and soil specifications. He has been a visiting lecturer at Harvard and many other universities, as well as presenting at conferences in the United States, Canada, Europe, Brazil, Australia, and South East Asia. Projects which Urban completed include the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, the Hirschhorn Museum, the Martin Luther King Memorial, Dumbarton Oaks and the National Mall Reconstruction Project. The Tree Commission sees this as a unique opportunity for Ashland to recreate its urban forest, enhancing Ashland’s beauty, increasing its sustainability, and ensuring healthy viable trees for future generations. The free presentation is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the Hannon Library Meese Room at Southern Oregon University.
