Accident claims life of Ashland youngster Posted May 24, 2004 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 19, 2011 at 5:46 AM By Bill Choy and Steve Zimmerman — — Tragedy struck an Ashland family this weekend, leaving — middle school students and staff coping with grief today. — Tracy Dewey, a 7th grade student at Ashland Middle School, — died over the weekend in a fall at Fort Rock Park in Central Oregon, middle — school principal Dale Rooklyn announced in an e-mail today. — Rooklyn said Dewey, 13, was with her father and another — student when she fell. — A counseling team met with students, parents and staff — at the school this morning. Students are being asked to write letters — of support to Tracy's father and to support the family by purchasing food — trays for the family. The school is also planning to plant a tree at the — middle school in Tracy's name. — "It's just so hard for everyone," Rooklyn said this morning. — "We are all very shocked and distraught." — Rooklyn remembered Tracy as a very sweet, friendly girl — who was active in school and well liked by teachers and students. — "She was a very positive person," Rooklyn said. " She — was a very happy and sweet child. We will miss her very much." — The school's counseling team has been made available to — students, parents and staff who need to talk about Tracy's death, Rooklyn — said. — Rooklyn said while students have died over the summer, — this is the first time since he's been at the school that a student has — died during the school year. — There will be a memorial gathering Saturday from noon — to 6 p.m. at her home at 2530 Siskiyou Boulevard — She is survived by her father, Paul Dewey, her brother — Benjamin, sister Amy Dewey and her mother Petra Dewey.
