ASHLAND PARKS & REC Stormy weather for footgolf kick-off day Oak Knolls officially launches 10-hole course By Bert Etling Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Bert Etling Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 11, 2015 @ 5:31 pm By Bert Etling Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 11, 2015 @ 5:31 pm » RELATED CONTENT • Ashland footgolf event gives players a new way to get around the links... • ASHLAND: Oak Knoll to host free FootGolf event » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Footgolf didn't exactly get off on the right foot Monday, but Oak Knoll Golf Course Manager Tom Cronin isn't worried. "Fifty-five degrees with rain blowing sideways is NOT what we had hoped for!" he commented Monday afternoon, the first day of official footgolf play on a 10-hole course at the Ashland facility. No one had signed up to play by the time he left for the day but, added, "We've had a lot of community interest in footgolf — when the 80-degree days come back, we should have lots of play." “One of the exciting things ... is the interest that has been shown in the sport by millennials, women and children. It’s an opportunity for young families to enjoy the course,” Cronin said. Ashland Parks & Recreation operates the municipal course on the southeast corner of town. A few people turned out for a free test day of play over what was then a four-hole footgolf course on March 13. Oak Knoll, a new member of the American FootGolf League (AFGL), touts the game as "perfect for juniors, families, soccer teams or anyone looking to enjoy the beautiful Oak Knoll Golf Course at an affordable price." Players can bring their own soccer ball, or rent one for $3. Fees are $4 for under 18-year-olds and $8 for adults. Soft-soled shoes (not soccer cleats) are required.  Footgolf, Parks & Recreation said in a news release, was introduced in the U.S. in 2011 and is already being played at hundreds of golf courses across the country. This sport combines elements of soccer and golf. The player’s goal is simple: to kick a soccer ball into a 21-inch cup in the fewest strokes possible. For more information, go to www.footgolf.net or www.OakKnollGolf.org, or call Oak Knoll at 541-482-4311. Tee times should be booked ahead of time. Groups of up to four may play together.
