Fry some ham then pour the spiced water into the drippings. Stir and boil for a minute. This Southern dish is now called Red Eye Gravy, It was renamed by General Andrew Jackson. While leading his men in the field, he called his cook to order lunch. He ordered biscuits, fried ham and red gravy. The cook's eyes were bloodshot from some moonshine he had consumed. Jackson amended his request: "I want gravy as red as your eyes." It has been Red Eye Gravy ever since. There are many other common dishes with colorful names.
