GRIZZ ROUNDUP Graham sparks Grizzly rout Point guard lifts AHS boys with defense, shooting Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Jan. 7, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Jan. 7, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News At 5-foot-6, Stenley Graham may usually be the shortest player on the court, but Ashland’s junior point guard is still finding a way to make a huge impact for the Grizzlies. Graham came off the bench to score a game-high 12 points and sparked Ashland’s full-court press to a first-quarter rout as the Grizzlies torched Phoenix 55-22 in nonconference boys basketball action Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym. Graham entered the game early in the first quarter and quickly asserted himself, pressuring Phoenix’s ball-handlers, pushing the tempo and generally turning the game heavily in Ashland’s favor. By the time the horn sounded Ashland led 27-2. “(Graham) led us on the defensive end with his energy,” said Ashland head coach Keithan Gregg, whose team improved to 6-4. “He came in right away and led us in scoring. He didn’t play much in the second half but he kind of picked us up and got us going. “(Graham) pesters. He’s that one guard you love to have on your team but you hate to play against him.” Collin Malcolm added 11 points, Walker Shibley-Styer six, and four more Grizzlies netted at least four in the easy win. For Phoenix (4-7), which suffered its fourth loss in a row and second to Ashland, sophomore guard Thomas Skaff scored seven points. The Grizzlies turned up the heat from the get-go, using a full-court press to hound the Pirates into a flood of turnovers which were quickly cashed in at the other end. “Defense produced offense,” Gregg said. “We had a little talk about the Marist beatdown we took (last Friday) and decided to turn the season around and start pressing. They came out with that attitude. Then we got steals, got out in transition and made baskets, and it kind of snowballed from there.” The Grizzlies let up after their big opening quarter blitz, but still led 43-19 heading into the fourth quarter, when Gregg emptied the bench. Graham hit four of Ashland’s nine 3-pointers, while Shibley-Styer added two. The Pirates didn’t help their cause at the free throw line, making just 4 of 14 from the stripe. Gregg said Ashland will impose a similar strategy when it resumes its Midwestern League schedule Friday at Churchill. “It’s always hard to go on the road and get a win,” he said, “but it’s just one of those things that, we just gotta come out and get after it right from the start. We’ve really gotta jump on people right away. “Everyone’s healthy now and we’re ready to get the rest of the conference season going. We’re going to surprise some people along the way.” PHOENIX (22) – Skaff 7, Mahaffey 4, Mejia 2, Botermans 2, Hague 2, Sauceda 2, Masalosalo 2, Turnbull 1, Beer 0, Hay 0, George 0. Totals: 9 4-14 22. ASHLAND (55) – Graham 12, Malcolm 11, Shibley-Styer 6, Kennedy 5, Feinberg 4, Pippa 4, Hansen 4, Meads 3, Hasskamp 2, Fuller 2, Ellis 0, Edson 0. Totals: 20 6-10 55. Phoenix 2 11 6 3 – 22 Ashland 27 9 7 12 – 55 3-point goals – Ashland 9 (Graham 4, Shibley-Styer 2, Malcolm 1, Kennedy 1, Pippa 1). JV result – Ashland won. Girls Basketball Senior posts Michaela Dunn and Sierra Webster combined for 24 points as Ashland ran circles around Phoenix’s box-and-one defense for a 54-38 nonconference victory Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym. Dunn led the Grizzlies with 14 points and Webster added 10 points and five rebounds for Ashland, which adjusted to the Pirates’ effort to shut down Georgia Williams by allowing Williams to distribute. The star senior guard and Columbia commit did just that, and also added seven points to help the Grizzlies earn their second double-digit win over Phoenix this season. “We have a lot of scoring and it’s not just Georgia, and everybody else was taking full advantage,” Ashland head coach Ashley Hafner said of Phoenix’s defensive strategy. “Georgia as a senior now has grown tremendously. Two years ago that would have got in her head, but now she’s like, ‘You can face guard me all you want,’ and she becomes the distributer. It didn’t really faze her.” Williams also added five boards, while sophomore post Leilani Sukles had eight points and five rebounds. Phoenix (4-6) was led by Bailee Tally, who scored a game-high 25 points. Ashland (6-4) resumes its Midwestern League schedule Friday at home against Churchill. PHOENIX (38) – Tally 25, MacLennan 3, Wallack 1, Hickman 5, Burns 2, De La Torre 2. Totals: 14 5-16 38. ASHLAND (54) – Williams 7, Rodriques 4, Altig 2, Honeycutt 0, Teixeira 0, Dunn 14, Webster 10, Sukles 8, Read 5, Rooney 4, Brookins 0. Totals: 23 7-11 54. Phoenix 9 8 6 15 – 38 Ashland 13 11 24 6 – 54 3-point goals – Phoenix 5 (Tally 5), Ashland 1 (Dunn 1). JV score – Ashland won. Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-776-4469 or [email protected].
