EDUCATION Applications open for 'Makers' fair at ScienceWorks Makers, crafters and performers wanted for inaugural Rogue Valley Mini Maker Faire Comment By ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum DailyTidings.com By ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum Posted Jul. 12, 2016 at 6:52 PM By ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum Posted Jul. 12, 2016 at 6:52 PM » Social News The inaugural Rogue Valley Mini Maker Faire is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19, at ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum in Ashland. The call for makers, artists, performers, and crafters is open through Sept.16. Any groups or individuals interested in presenting their project, activity, or performance in this event can complete an application at roguevalleymakerfaire.com/makers . Maker Faire is the "Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth," a family friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the "Maker" movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. Visitors and participants will get to make, create, craft, recycle, build, think, play and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community. The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, California, and in 2016 celebrated its 11th annual show with some 1,300 makers and 150,000 people in attendance. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in five years to 900+ makers and 90,000 attendees. Thirty-one larger scale Maker Faires occur in cities around the world — Detroit, Atlanta, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, and Shenzhen, to name a few. More than 150 community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced in the United States and in 34 other countries around the world, including right here in Southern Oregon. The Rogue Valley Mini Maker Faire is a community based event with organizing entities including ScienceWorks Museum, Rogue Hack Lab, Make Media, and individuals from the regional Maker community. Follow the development of the Rogue Valley Mini Maker Faire on Twitter @roguevalleymakerfaire, as well as on its Facebook page, www.facebook.com/roguevalleymakerfaire . Rogue Valley Mini Maker Faire is independently organized and operated under license from Maker Media, Inc. MAKE is the first magazine devoted entirely to Do It Yourself (DIY) technology projects. According to its website, MAKE unites, inspires, informs, and entertains a growing community of resourceful people who undertake amazing projects in their backyards, basements, and garages. MAKE celebrates the right to tweak, hack, and bend any technology to your will. ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum is a nonprofit educational science center that has served the Rogue Valley region since 2002. Located at 1500 East Main St. in Ashland, the museum is home to more than 100 exhibits, and hosts themed weekends, and ongoing fun, educational, science programs for all ages year-round.
