Alan Bates, D-Medford, who died suddenly Aug. 5. Both candidates have the potential to represent Ashland well. Jackson County Democrats chose Talent resident Tonia Moro, a Medford attorney, as their nominee. Moro brings a passion for many of the issues that are important to Ashland residents, and a record of community involvement on those same topics. Moro, who ran unsuccessfully for Jackson County commissioner in 2014, is chairwoman of the Rogue Valley Transportation District. As a board member of OnTrack Inc., she worked on mental health and family services issues, which were important to Bates as well. Moro also has worked on legislation for clean energy, helped found Rogue Climate, an organization backing clean energy solutions for climate change, opposed LNG pipelines and helped organize community forums on housing and poverty. Republican nominee Alan DeBoer, a lifetime Ashland resident, needs no introduction to many in Ashland thanks to years of community involvement, including a term on the City Council and a term as mayor. He also served on the Ashland School Board, the Mt. Ashland Association board and the Southern Oregon Historical Society. Senate District 3 has more registered Democrats than Republicans, but also has nearly 20,000 non-affiliated voters, and has elected candidates of both parties. And DeBoer vows to pursue positive solutions if elected, avoiding a partisan approach. Both candidates bring strengths that should appeal to Ashlanders. Let the campaign begin.
