At 18 she married surveyor Jessie Applegate. They built a log cabin on the Osage River in Missouri, where she bore six of their 13 children and enjoyed kind neighbors and the fruits of the land. In 1843, the Applegates moved on to Oregon, where tragedy struck on the Columbia River, when their oldest son was drowned. The territory was new and different and Cynthia was lonely. They built a new home in the wilderness of the Umpqua River that was to become Yoncalla. Jessie was often away surveying, but Cynthia was a good manager of farm and home. Like most pioneer wives, she wove cloth, sewed all the clothes for her growing family, and kept a vegetable garden. In 1849, thousands of miners on their way to California willingly paid high prices for Cynthia’s butter and cheese. She helped out her neighbors even when they were few. Once she even hosted a Catholic Mass at her house, though she was a Protestant. Cynthia Applegate was typical of the pioneer woman overcoming loneliness and isolation to raise a family and build a new community. Source: Long, S.
