At Stake: Southern Oregon can clinch at least a share of the Frontier Conference title with a win and increase its chances of hosting a game or two in the NAIA Championship Series. Eastern Oregon can secure its first-ever NAIA playoff berth. Online: Links to live stats and video available at souraiders.com. » Social News As the fourth-ranked team in the country, Southern Oregon’s place in the 16-team NAIA Championship Series is assured regardless of what happens today against Eastern Oregon. But the Raiders’ goal all along has been to claim the program’s first national championship, and a win today over the 16th-ranked Mountaineers could make SOU’s path to Dayton Beach, Fla., significantly smoother than the alternative. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Raider Stadium. Though they’ve already earned, however unofficially, a spot in the NAIA playoffs, the Raiders have a whole lot to play for today. With a win over Eastern, they’ll clinch their second Frontier Conference championship in three years and break a program record for wins in a season. Southern Oregon (9-1, 8-1 Frontier) can also make a strong case for hosting two playoff games starting with a first-round matchup Nov. 22. SOU hasn’t hosted a playoff game since 2002. If, on the other hand, the Raiders suffer another heartbreaking loss to the Mountaineers — EOU smothered SOU’s slim playoff hopes late last season at Raider Stadium — SOU could be saddled with nothing but road trips from here on out. So yes, it matters. “We’ve played a lot of great ones with Eastern Oregon over the years, but in our time here this is by far the most important,” SOU head coach Craig Howard said. “We have a lot of respect for (EOU head coach) Tim Camp and the job he’s done, and I’d love to see both teams in the playoffs.” That’s unlikely to happen unless the Mountaineers (7-3, 6-3) pull off the upset. They’ve already proven themselves capable. Eastern had its longtime rival on the ropes back in Week 3 in La Grande, up 31-28 late in the fourth quarter. But Melvin Mason scored from the 2 with 2:11 to go to cap an epic 17-play, 85-yard drive and the Raiders held on from there. Eastern recovered and has won seven of nine since, including a clutch 27-24 road victory over then 10th-ranked Rocky Mountain on Sept. 27. Now, the Mounties are a win away from potentially securing what would be the program’s first NAIA Championship Series berth. The NAIA announces first-round pairings Sunday. Both teams enter the game on three-game win streaks. SOU has bounced back nicely from its lone loss — to Carroll on Oct. 18 — and, even by its own high standards, has put up some huge numbers on offense recently. Eastern has been just as impressive, averaging 49 points since falling to Montana Western. For the Raiders, senior quarterback Austin Dodge leads the NAIA in every major passing category and needs 28 more completions to break another NAIA career record. His top target, senior Dylan Young, leads the nation in receiving yards per game (128.3) and touchdown catches (17). Mason has rushed for 725 yards and 10 touchdowns. Eastern Oregon quarterback Zach Bartlow has completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,189 yards and 18 touchdowns. Receiver-turned-running back Jace Billingsley leads the Mountaineers in both rushing (625 yards, eight TDs) and receiving (57 catches, 624 yards, six TDs). Billingsley had 11 catches for 130 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders in the first meeting. “(Billingsley’s) going to play everywhere,” Howard said of the 5-foot-9, 185-pound game-breaker, “and we’ll be playing ‘Where’s Waldo?’ all day. He’s certainly one of the best players in the country and he’s been very hard on us.” Defensively, the Raiders have picked off five passes and recovered two fumbles the last two weeks. Senior linebacker Laurence Calcagno leads SOU in tackles (98), tackles for a loss (10.5) and sacks (4.5). Heston Altenbach, another senior linebacker, ranks second in tackles (82) and is nine takedowns away from jumping to No. 4 on SOU’s all-time list.
