I am not a fan of the redesigned plaza. But the same can be said for the single lane section at the north end of town or the new addition to the library. That being said, I am the sort of person that would rather make lemonade out of lemons. Why not treat the existing plaza as an opportunity rather than an accident? Why not think of the pavers as a huge chalkboard and have a competition to see who can draw the best chalk drawing on the pavers? People who come to visit will realize how creative we Ashlanders are. Who knows, it might even become as popular as doing a Shakespeare play in the park in the mid '30s. Mike Schilling Ashland Mt. Ashland ideas Summer activities are great idea to turn Mt. Ashland into a multi-use area. It's such a wonderful place to go to beat the heat. Geocaching would attract hikers to view the beauty of the area while enjoying the sport. When I lived in Colorado, Colorado State Forest State Park officially sanctioned geocaching which significantly raised the attendance at the park. Steve Irish Ashland I am writing to express my strong support for the Youth Activities and Academic Levy. I am an independent college advisor with an office in Ashland. I work with dozens of students each year helping them identify colleges that will allow them to continue their academic path. Once they have identified their target colleges, I help them put together the strongest possible applications so that they can compete with the thousands of other students applying to the same schools. As everyone is aware, the applicant pools are getting stronger and stronger and the admissions rates at colleges are getting lower and lower. Getting a 4.0 and strong SAT scores no longer is enough to guarantee admission to college. Colleges are now taking a much closer look at what students do outside of the classroom. Students now must put together resumes that help colleges understand their participation and success in activities inside and outside of the classroom. The activities that YAAL has supported since 1994 have allowed students to have rich and full high school experiences. It is vital to students in Ashland and to our community as a whole to continue supporting these activities. If we want our students to continue to excel and gain admission to the colleges of their dreams, we, as a community, need to continue to support them. I know that every single one of my students has benefited immensely from YAAL. I urge everyone to support this very important measure. Eric Danson, independent college advisor Ashland Not a regular visitor Ms. Kupillas from Medford suggests in the May 5 Tidings that Rep. Greg Walden is a "regular visitor to our area." So, when was his last visit to Ashland? Been here 6.5 years and can't say he has made the attempt. Working for all of us? Please — he does not represent many of us down here in just about any way! Just ask those who are struggling. Greg thinks even more cuts to social programs would be a good thing, even as he supports continued tax breaks for the 1 percent. I'll be there if he ever chooses to hear from us here !
