SOU ROUNDUP No. 17 Raiders take surprise tumble at Northwest Eagles seize 19-point lead in first half; SOU women win big Comment By SOU Sports Information DailyTidings.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Feb. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM By SOU Sports Information Posted Feb. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News KIRKLAND, Wash. — Northwest University built a 19 point lead in the first half and held on to shock No. 17 Southern Oregon 84-68 Friday in Cascade Conference men's basketball action at the NU Pavilion. Nemanja Grujicic and C.J. Carter combined for 40 points to lead Northwest. Northwest (14-11, 4-9 CCC) shot 54 percent, including 40 percent from the 3-point line, as Carter and Grujicic each scored 20 for the Eagles. Dak Shagren scored 19 and Tomas Ogbaslassie dropped in 14 points for NU. The Eagles won the battle of the rebounding with a 36-26 edge. Ben DeSaulnier led Southern Oregon (19-6, 9-5 CCC) with a team-high 18 points and Jordan West contributed 17 points for the Raiders. Kenny Meyer added 13 points. Southern Oregon heads to Olympia to play Evergreen State tonight. Women's Basketball At Kirkland, Wash., with multiple post presences alongside her, Carly Meister hasn't needed to shoulder as large of a load this season for the 13th-ranked Southern Oregon University women's basketball team. Lately, the numbers have come to her anyway. Meister scored a career-high 32 points Friday night, going 15-for-20 with 10 rebounds to help the Raiders control Northwest University from start to finish, 89-72. The Raiders secured their third consecutive 20-win season, improving to 20-3 overall and 11-3 in the Cascade Conference. They remain in second place, one game behind 23rd-ranked Eastern Oregon, going into today's 5:30 p.m. contest at Evergreen State. They took over early against Northwest (11-13, 3-10), leading 23-10 eight minutes in and 51-29 by halftime. Thirty-two of those points were in the paint, thanks in part to a 29-11 rebounding advantage in the half and 21-of-39 shooting. Meister had 18 points and seven boards before halftime and finished with her second double-double in five games. She's averaged 15.2 points during that stretch after posting 10.8 through SOU's first 18 games. Autumn Durand totaled 18 points and six rebounds, going 4-for-8 from the floor and 8-for-9 at the free-throw line. Alexi Smith had 14 points and six boards, and Tiani Bradford came off the bench to put up nine points on 4-of-6 accuracy. The Eagles were led by Jordan Asher's 24 points and four assists. They were held to 36-percent shooting (26-for-72) as a team and went 4-for-24 from downtown. The Raiders' lead was largest at 74-45 with 11 minutes left. They swept the season series after having won 110-74 on Jan. 10. SOU honors At Medford, the Southern Oregon Sports Commission recognized several Raider student-athletes, including 2014 SOSC male athlete of the year Austin Dodge, during its inaugural banquet Thursday at the Santo Community Center. Dodge, a senior quarterback on SOU's championship football team, earned the top honor to pile onto a number of accolades he has already received, including NAIA football player of the year. Former SOU runner Eric Avila and current Raider wrestler Brock Gutches — who won NAIA titles of their own in 2014 — were also finalists for the award. Stephanie Techler, the 2014 NAIA pole-vault champion, was a finalist for female athlete of the year. That award was ultimately won by former Cascade Christian swimmer Breanna Sapienza, who won eight state titles before extending her career at Vanderbilt University. Also at the banquet, the Mail Tribune's top 10 sports stories of 2014 were counted down. Atop that list was the SOU football team's title, while Gutches was No. 4 and Avila was No. 9. The SOSC was formed in 2013 by the Chamber of Medford/Jackson County and Travel Medford. Made of volunteer community members who share a passion of sports ranging from traditional team sports to the outdoors, its goal is to enhance sports tourism by promoting events in the Rogue Valley.
