The city of Ashland is hosting a four-hour tour of the Ashland watershed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. The tour focuses on the Ashland Forest Resiliency project area where work on forest restoration and fire safety is intended to protect the slopes shedding into Reeder Reservoir, through which the bulk of the city's water supply passes. Recent funding has allowed the city to move forward with plans to thin more than 1,000 new acres with a combination of ecologically sensitive machinery and light touch helicopter thinning set to begin this fall, the city said in a prepared statement. Tour takers will look at proposed thinning areas, recently marked trees and hear about intricacies involved in planning the work in diverse and sensitive landscape that's prone to wildfire.
