His thoughts - that all human beings are subject to the natural law of the universe, and as such, privilege to a core of civil liberties that humans should bestow upon each other - became a cornerstone to American civics and American democracy. That today we have an executive branch that carelessly throws those rights away by preying upon our fear of terrorism is perhaps the saddest testimony of the current state of American democracy. If basic civil rights are part of our creed, as specifically spelled out in the Bill of Rights, then these rights cannot be randomly applied, and taken away, at the whim of one president's tenure. That Americans are tolerating the endless detention of human beings in Guantanamo Bay is a travesty. These men, confined without hope, are compelling proof that this administration must end. Worse, it is a black mark on a proud democracy's history.
