Stars of the future invited to prove their potential By AMBER FOSSEN Ashland Daily Tidings Wanted: Local talent with vocal gift. The "A" Street Rising Star search is on and organizers hope to find a gifted songbird for an exclusive recording session with a Hollywood producer. "The winner is flown to Santa Barbara, California, and they're going to be met by Mariah Carey's former producer Ben Margulies," event coordinator Barbara Ann Diskin said. Diskin, founder of BDS -an event planning and graphics company - said the star search is a chance for local singers to land a record deal in addition to helping the Oregon Make-A-Wish Foundation. "With that, I thought this would turn out to be a win-win situation for everyone," she said. "It's a great charity to support." "A" Street Rising Star finals will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21. Tickets are $2 per day and 100 percent of proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. Auditions began Tuesday at the "A" Street Market Place, according to Diskin. So far, there's been no shortage of talent. "These people that are showing up are all excellent," Diskin said. "If they are anything like they were yesterday, they stopped the people right in their tracks." A final audition will be held from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 8 at the "A" Street Market Place on "A" and Pioneer streets. Selected finalists will compete to meet with Bernie Sandler, former chairman of the board for Commercial Talent Agency of Hollywood. Sandler will then introduce the winner to Margulies who was responsible for producing and co-writing many of the songs on Mariah Carey's album "Mariah Carey." "He's looking again for undiscovered talent," Diskin said. Margulies will take the winner to his world-class recording studio and produce a demo of the winner's song. Once the recording is complete, the winner and Margulies will discuss potentials for the future in the recording industry. Interested singers must be at least 10 years old.
