Ashland Ski Area expansion can breathe easily for a while longer. The financial hit the ski area took from one non-season followed by a 38-day season means the expansion isn't in the works for at least the next five years. Meanwhile, Mt. Ashland needs the help of everyone in Ashland and beyond to pay for maintenance and keep operating. Ski area officials have launched a $650,000 fundraising campaign — they're already more than a third of the way there even before Thursday's announcement — to fix the leaky ski lodge roof, build wooden ramps for loading lifts and realigning one of the Windsor lift towers, among other things. Some of the money will go to cut small trees  growing in the middle of runs that prevent opening during low-snow conditions. The fundraising campaign will allow the ski area to perform this necessary work without taking on more debt. That's a prudent move. And some of the money raised will go toward a contingency fund. Supporting the campaign will benefit not only skiers but the local economy as well, especially in the winter months when tourism is at its lowest ebb. The ski area, a community-owned nonprofit, provides valuable recreation as well as jobs for local residents. Without Mt. Ashland, local skiers would take their money out of the area more often.  Expansion opponents frequently said they supported the ski area, but not the expansion.
