He died Saturday at the age of 64. A native of Tucson, Read came to Ashland in 1978, soon meeting his wife of many decades, Ellie Read. He was a member of many bands, with and without Ellie — Milk and Honey, Palamino, Country Dreams, Buckshot and Pyramid. The couple had a son, Jesse, in 1981 and are raising a grandson, Dari, 7, who has Down syndrome. Guitarist Read worked at Musicians Friend for 23 years and created the corporation-wide Department of Artist Relations, involving drawings that allowed customers to hang with the big names, Ellie said. “It’s important to find ways to let customers experience the reality of playing on stage with a big name," he wrote in his bio on www.gofundme.com/Steve-Read-Cancer-Fund. Sweepstakes' winners get paid trips to see stadium and club concerts in larger cities. The package includes a private meeting with the artist and a backstage tour. Bands and musicians that Musicians Friends worked with include Fleetwood Mac, Santana and Brian Setzer. Read hosted the trips and traveled with winners. He got to know many star musicians and was invited to play on stage with them. “One of my favorite nights," Read wrote, "was playing with Elliot Easton of The Cars, Bruce Kulick of Kiss, Simon Kirke of Bad Company, Gary Burr of Ringo's All-Star Band and Jack Blades and Kelly Keaggy of Night Ranger at a private event held at a rehearsal studio in Hollywood. The audience kept calling out tunes, and we just kept playing them.” Fellow Ashland musician Boris Cummings said, “He was a sweet man and very stoic about his health challenges. He was quite a guy. I met Steve and Ellie in ’79. We played a lot together back then. I never heard him say anything negative about anyone.” Rogue Suspects members Greg Frederick and Dirk Price both called him “an honorary Suspect forever.” “I am heartbroken,” said Price. “He was the first person I met in Ashland. “He steered me to (events) and I never knew him to say or do anything not worthy of respect. He was admirable in his devotion to his family, friends and community.” Frederick notes, “Like most musicians in the valley, our friendships were built as we played on local stages. Steve was always a great face to see in the crowd or along side you on stage. He was gentle, talented and funny as hell. He was a very versatile guitarist, he had heavy influences of Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton but he could play just about anything you threw at him. At Musicians Friend he was a real gear hound. We would spent hours talking about guitars, amps, tubes and strings. He was very fortunate to meet and play with some of the greatest musicians in history. It was always fun to see photos of him with the Who, Santana, Motley Crue and more — a virtual who's who of rock. “Mostly I will remember Steve on stage with his precious Ellie at his side, the two of them playing and singing in wonderful harmony together. We used to laugh that Steve and Ellie was just one word.” Read was diagnosed in January 2013 with liver cancer but some months later was denied a liver transplant under the Oregon Health Plan rules, according to his gofundme page, which raised $16,840 for his bills. The present Cover Oregon was “really good to us” and the family now has few bills, Ellie Read adds. Read credited cannabis oil with making him cancer-free, he said in an 2013 interview, and he mentored other cancer patients on its use, Ellie Read said.   “He died cancer-free and also hepatitis-free,” she said. “He spent the last years of his life helping others. It was all done legally under Oregon law. He cured himself. He died of infections in his blood, which he could no longer fight off.” Ellie Read concluded, “He was a good husband and father and a really good guy.” John Darling is a freelance writer living in Ashland.
