Moore had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead SOU to a 68-59 comeback win. Photos by Ken Royce | For the Tidings Rock-solid second-half defense allowed the second-ranked Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team to overcome Willamette University, 68-59, for the Flagship Inn Classic championship at McNeal Pavilion Saturday night. Playing without injured All-American forward Shea Washington, the NAIA Div. II Raiders (8-1) overcame a 29-16 first-half hole and used a 13-0 run in the waning moments to erase a 57-55 deficit for their eighth straight home-court win and seventh consecutive overall. The NCAA Div. III Bearcats (2-2), who toppled fourth-ranked Oregon Tech Friday night, fell to 2-2 after squandering a 34-31 halftime lead and missing 18 of their second-half shots. “We played very, very hard defensively and did a nice job covering their (motion offense) cuts and curls,” Raider coach Brian McDermott said. “Offensively, we rushed things the first few minutes, but once we started to get into 20- to 25-second possessions we started creating better looks and making some shots.” SOU clanked 10 of its first 13 looks at the basket, but senior point guard Steve Farley and junior Erion Moore helped whittle the WU lead and finished with season-best performances. Farley went 6-for-11 for 17 points along with seven assists, while Moore, a 6-foot-6 post starting in place of Washington, was 9-for-16 and amassed game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. SOU SOPHOMORE MATT COWELL shoots a 3-pointer during Saturday’s game. Cowell hit a trio of 3s on his way to 11 points. “Winning a game like this (without Washington) against a well-coached and talented team gives us a lot of confidence heading into conference play,” McDermott said. “People did well in some new roles, and I didn’t expect Erion to make as many post-up shots as he did, and that was a real key.” Junior Matt Cowell’s 22-foot 3-point shot from the right wing broke a 57-all deadlock with 2:55 left, and the Bearcats missed their next eight shots until mop-up time. After canning four 3-pointers in the opening nine minutes, WU converted only one trey the rest of the contest, including a 1-for-8 effort in the second half. Senior wing John Olinger (11) was the lone Bearcat in double-digits for scoring. Junior Josh Erickson had nine, and sophomore post Ian Mansfield had seven points and a team-best nine rebounds. The Raiders shot 45-percent (26 of 58), nailed 10 3-pointers and outrebounded Willamette 37-30. Jeff Williams (12 points, eight rebounds) and Cowell (11 points, eight rebounds) also had solid nights for SOU, which is off to the program’s best start since 1968-69. Having defeated WU for the first time in five meetings since 2000, the Raiders now open an 18-game Cascade Conference schedule next weekend at Corban and Concordia. Owl victory Sophomore shooting guard Ryan Fiegi had his best game as an Owl to lead fourth-ranked Oregon Tech to a 94-69 rout of William Jessup University in the Day 2 opener of the Flagship Inn Classic. The former South Medford High all-stater and Western Oregon transfer converted 10 of his 13 shots, including all five 3-point attempts and all five free throws, for a game-high 30 points. The Owls (6-1) dominated guard play, and it also received a 23-point, eight-assist, four-steal performance from junior all-star floor general Levell Hesia. William Jessup (2-4) trailed 46-30 at halftime but moved within nine, 52-43, midway through the second half following an inside make by junior forward Joseph Mitchell, but Fiegi and senior guard Mike Hansen responded with treys in short succession to thwart the Warrior comeback. Mitchell finished with 24 points and six rebounds to lead the Rocklin, Calif. school. OIT shot over 50 percent the entire contest and finished with a 58-percent efficiency (33 of 57), including an 11-for-23 effort from beyond the arc (48 percent). WJU made 24 of its 59 shots (41 percent) and was outrebounded 35-30.
