--> --> Nov. 5: Grizz girls finish 13th at state meet; prep wrapup EUGENE - The Ashland High girls cross country team accomplished one of two goals they had set before the OSAA State cross country meet at Lane Community College Saturday afternoon. They didn't finish in the top 10, but they did finish ahead of rival Klamath Union. The Grizzlies nabbed the 13th spot out of the 18-team competition and managed to beat Klamath Union who came in 17th in the team competition. South Eugene won the state title. "I didn't have huge expectations going into the state meet," head coach Bob Julian said. "The competition we faced was tough. But we hung in there and gave it our best shot. I had a lot of girls that had a lot of aches and pains before the race and who were new to the state meet, but they managed to fight through those adversities and run a solid race." Christy Paul of Hood River Valley won the individual trophy in 18:27, the fastest time in eight years at the state meet. Junior Therese McCaffrey was the top finisher for the Grizzlies, finishing in 40th place with a time of 20:22. "She had a good race," Julian said. "She started off more aggressive because she wanted to place in the top 24 for the NIKE boarder clash meet. But she didn't make that place. She had to take that chance. She ran as fast as she could. Coming in a surprising 73rd place with a time of 20:59 was junior Kendall Clark. "I was a little bit surprised with how she finished," Julian said. "A half an hour before the race she wasn't even sure if she was going to run at all because her shins were hurting so bad. The time she got today wasn't nearly what she was running at the beginning of the season, but she was the fifth fastest girl out of our conference at the state meet." Freshman Rihana Patterson finished 82nd with a mark of 21:08. Other finishers for the Grizzlies included: junior Mariah Mayfield who finished with a time of 21:20, freshman Briana Lescher (21:50), senior Gretchen Buettner (21:51) and junior Claire Chavez (22:34). Ashland Boys Soccer At Corvallis, Crescent Valley's Brandon Kirkbride broke a 1-1 tie the second half as the fifth-ranked Raiders knocked off Ashland 3-1 in the second round of the OSAA playoffs. Ashland's Jesse Hodges dribbled through the CV defense and buried a shot from 15 yards out at the 51st minute to tie the game at 1-1. Kirkbride's game-winner came at the 58th minute. Crescent Valley's Patrick Fenner scored the Raiders' third goal of the game at the 69th minute. Ashland senior Josh Romberg, a part-time starter during the regular season, got the start in the playoff game at defender and was impressive. Ashland finished the year 10-3. Ashland Girls Soccer Ashland senior Stephanie Hargis was the lone Grizz to be named to the SOC all-star list. The goalkeeper came away with honorable mention all-SOC accolades. The Grizzlies finished the year 2-5 in the SOC. South Medford's Colleen Salisbury was named the SOC Player of the Year, while Klamath Union's Gerrin deGroot took home top coaching honors.
