The day will begin with the 40th annual APRC Fourth of July run at 7:45 a.m. Two runs are offered, a two-mile fun run and a 10k. The races are chip-timed. Children under 12 costs $10 and adults start at $20. The start and finish line is at the corner of Third and Gresham streets near the Ashland Public Library at 410 Siskiyou Boulevard. The routes are on closed roadways and a portion of the 10k cuts along the Bear Creek Greenway. An award ceremony will follow the races at noon at the library. The event is a fundraiser for the Ashland and Phoenix High School cross country teams. Register online at www.ashlandparksandrec.org . The old-fashioned parade begins at 10 a.m. The parade starts at Triangle Park on Siskiyou Boulevard, travels down East Main Street and ends downtown on Water Street. Four members of APRC will assist in the role of Grand Marshal: Mike Gardiner, APRC chair; Marge Bernard, Ashland Parks Foundation vice-chair; Michael Black and Tom Foster, founder of the Lithia Park Nature Walk Program. The parade has more than 80 entries this year, according to Katharine Cato, director of marketing and sales for Ashland Chamber of Commerce. A wildflower show at the community center on Winburn Way across from the park, hosted by the Native Plant Society of Oregon will last from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. a family-activity zone near the entrance of the park will have a generous amount of activities for kids. Food and craft vendors may be found on Winburn Way, along the side of the park. Various musical performances in the Butler Bandshell between noon and 4 p.m. include the Ashland City Band (noon - 12:30 p.m. and 1:15 - 1:30 p.m.), the California Repercussions (1:45 - 2:30 p.m.) and the College Fund Street Band (2:45 - 3:15 p.m.). Mayor John Stromberg will give a welcome speech at 12:30 p.m. at the bandshell, followed by a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Barry Kraft and the Gettysburg Address by Bob Jackson Miner as Abraham Lincoln at 1 p.m. A time capsule will be buried by APRC at approximately 1:30 p.m. near Ender’s Shelter in the park. The contents of the time capsule will be revealed in 50 years: 2066. APRC and Ashland Parks Foundation will have booths set up near the entrance of the park with literature and guides about the park. Ashland Parks Foundation will advertise and take donations for a book written by John Enders, local historian and journalist. The book, “Lithia Park: The Heart and Soul of Ashland” will be published in October in honor of the 100th anniversary. A free shuttle bus will run one route from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The bus runs between the Tolman Creek Plaza Albertson’s bus stop and the downtown bus stop, on Lithia Way between First and Second streets. The bus will run every 30 minutes.   Handicap and senior parking will be available at Wells Fargo Bank on 67 E. Main St. There is a ban on fireworks in the city of Ashland. They are not permitted to be used, sold, stored or advertised within the city. Ashland citizens who cooperate are helping to prevent fires, injuries and risk to our citizens and natural resources, according to a document released by Police Chief Tighe O’Meara. » Social News Got your Irish up? This year’s “Star Spangled Spectacular” in Ashland features an Irish theme and a performance by the 13-year-old national Irish Fiddle Champion, along with two dancers who served as leads in Riverdance productions around the world. The American Band College will perform its 28th annual starting at 8 p.m. Monday, July 4, at Ashland High School stadium. This year’s performance is titled “Ashland Pops American-Irish Show” and is based around an Irish theme. “Every year, we pick a thematic idea, and this year was Irish,” said Max McKee, executive director of the American Band College. The program consists of more than 200 members of the Master’s Degree program from Sam Houston State University, band directors from 39 states and eight foreign countries and various Irish musicians. The program also features a 100-member choir. Special guests include Haley Richardson, 13-year-old National Irish Fiddle Champion, two professional “Riverdance” dancers, and a Celtic Quartet of Irish musicians from Portland. Headliners include Dutch composer Johan de Meij, known for his symphony “Lord of the Rings,” and famed Irish composer Bill Whelan, who wrote the music for the musical “Riverdance.” The night won’t only be about Irish music. Americana music will be played often, especially towards the end of the performance when the musicians sync with the fireworks. Special performances aided by audience participation will dot the night as well. “You’re not just watching a concert,” said McKee. “It’s like a New York stage show. You’ll see one thing happening and then there’s band members in the crowd, then there’s dancing, then there’s a soloist. It works like a play.” The audience is encouraged to sing along to the performance, even the Irish music, according to McKee. “There’s two monster screens with lyrics displayed on them,” said McKee. The high school is currently renovating the turf on the lawn of the stadium, so laying on the lawn won’t be an option this year. There will be plenty of seating in the bleachers, according to McKee. “It’s the best seat in town to watch the fireworks,” said McKee. The event is co-sponsored by the Ashland Chamber of Commerce. The American Band College is donating $5 per ticket to the annual public fireworks display. Tickets are $24 for general admission and $20 for seniors. Tickets can be purchased at Cripple Creek Music at 353 E. Main St. in Ashland until Sunday, July 3, and online at www.bandworld.org/tickets .
