One story, for example, was told about Jacksonville, Ore., brewer Viet Schutz, who had been elected county coroner as a prank. The story goes that the young men who promoted his election decided to give him some business. They constructed a straw man in suit, boots and hat, then hung it out an upstairs window of the Masonic building. At dusk, they called the near-sighted marshal, who after squinting at the “body,” ordered that it be moved to the old city jail. A pool table cover served as a shroud. The next morning Schutz impaneled a jury and held an inquest. Quite a crowd gathered to see the proceedings. Several witnesses testified, then Schutz went over to examine the corpse. Just as he lifted the shroud, the young men kicked the straw body into the horrified crowd. Schutz laughed with embarrassment and announced, in his thick accent, "Well, poys, coom up to te prewery und I’ll gif efery von some peer.” At least that's the story the newspaper told.
