Ashland managed to hang with Crater for one quarter but was smothered from the second quarter on as the Comets outscored the Grizzlies 33-12 in the middle two quarters in the first league game between the longtime rivals since a Southern Sky Conference clash in 2010. Senior post Courtney Setzer hit two 3-pointers on her way to 16 points and junior guard Destiny Fahndrich added 14 to lead the Comets (12-1, 2-0 MWL), whose win streak hit 11 games. Georgia Williams had four points and 11 rebounds and Leilani Sukles added eight rebounds and two assists for the Grizzlies (7-6, 0-3), who were playing without starter Michaela Dunn and Olivia Rooney. “Their defense just shut us down,” Ashland coach Ashley Hafner said. “We started off strong then just started making turnovers. We went into halftime and talked about it and made some adjustments against their press, then came out and just didn’t execute.” It was business as usual for Crater, which has scored 50 points or more 10 times during its current streak and 60 points or more seven times this season. “They’re a disciplined team that plays together well and they execute,” Hafner said. “They have five players on the court who are all on the same page all the time, and they go 12 deep.” Ashland, which has yet to lose back to back games, will try to bounce back and earn its first conference win Friday at Springfield. Hafner said Dunn and Rooney will still be out, so it will take a monumental effort to come away with the win. “We need to go in there and be able to battle,” Hafner said. “It’s our first trip up to Eugene and the referring is different up there, usually more physical. Boys Basketball At Central Point, Ashland’s Walker Shibley-Styer scored 21 points and an offensive foul call negated a would-be go-ahead basket by Crater with 4.4 seconds to go as the Grizzlies held on to beat the Comets 50-46 in a wild Midwestern League game Tuesday at Crater High School. Collin Malcolm added 13 points and nine rebounds, including nine points and five boards in the third, and Shibley-Styer pulled down five rebounds and hit three free throws in the final five seconds to help the Grizzlies (7-5, 1-2 MWL) ice their first-ever MWL boys basketball victory. Ashland led 31-25 at the half and 42-39 heading into the fourth, then dodged a bullet down the stretch as the Comets (10-4, 2-1) appeared to reclaim the lead late before Race Reiter’s baby hook was wiped off the board with a charge call. The Comets wound up with one more chance after Ashland missed 3 of 4 free throws, but a full-court heave was picked off and Shibley-Styer hit two freebies with less than a second to go to put the game away. Crater, which saw its five-game win streak come to an end, was led by Gunnar Asher’s 12points. College Basketball The Southern Oregon men jumped one spot to No. 10 and the SOU women two spots to No. 14 in the latest NAIA division II top 25 basketball polls, released Tuesday. The Raider men swept both Evergreen State and Northwest to improve to 16-3 overall, 6-2 in the Cascade Conference, while the SOU women did the same to improve to 15-2 and 6-2. The SOU men’s team, which plays at Oregon Tech on Saturday, is one of four teams from the Cascade Conference to crack the top 25. The others are fourth-ranked College of Idaho, 14th-ranked Concordia and 21st-ranked Warner Pacific. On the women’s side, SOU is the only team from the Cascade Conference to appear in the top 25.
