We now live in Texas, not far from Crawford where George Bush lives. I know the people of Ashland would be interested in who his home town newspapers are supporting: www.iconoclast texas.com/Columns/Editorial/editorial39.htm Linda Hardman Formerly of Ashland Wright will take action on schools We all know the most important piece of legislation today is school finance. This has been at the top of the legislative list in Salem for 25 years or more with no results to solve the problem. My question is why would anyone vote for a legislator to the state senate when he failed on this issue in his last term? It seems to me, the only way to tackle school financing is to bring new ideas to the Legislature. Jim Wright is our only hope in the Senate race from our district to help solve this horrendous problem. We may have a fighting chance with Mr. Wright. L. Insley Ashland Another cry for 'Democracy Now' I'd love to hear "Democracy Now" on JPR. I tune in on my trips south, from about Corning to Sacramento, on listener-supported radio station KVMR (89.5 FM) out of Nevada City. I don't have AFN and only limited access to the Internet. For those of you who have never heard the program, I encourage you to give it a listen and decide for yourselves its value. How can one support the status quo of radio programming without knowing firsthand what is not being offered? P.S. I love the music Eric Alan spins on his program. Laura Lowey Ashland Hardesty knows what city needs We are voting for Jack Hardesty for Ashland City Council because we feel he will bring fresh thinking and a wealth of expertise to the council. Jack knows both business and government and yet is open-minded and a good listener. Most important, he truly appreciates what a privilege it is to live in this wonderful city and is dedicated to preserving and enhancing what makes it unique. Jane and John Stromberg Ashland Don't believe W has God's ideas Don't blame Dubya on God No matter how unlikely, some people still believe that George Bush has God in his corner. Whatever Bush - or a preacher - might say on the matter, would God really favor a nation's leader who has set a record for lying? A leader responsible for the death and maiming of tens of thousands of innocent people? A leader who gives to the rich and takes from the poor? A leader who is bankrupting his country, and devastating the environment? Let's not blame the Dubya disaster on God! Isaac Walker Ashland Hardesty will be a good councilor I have known Jack Hardesty for many years and I've always been impressed by his grasp of the issues and his political awareness. It takes a lot of courage to go into politics, especially when you run against an incumbent who has been on the council for so long. I admire Jack for his willingness to take on this job. Jack studies the issues carefully and speaks out for his causes. These include making Ashland pedestrian friendly, limiting the size of big buildings downtown and in the historic district, and making sure that the voices of Ashland citizens are heard. I feel certain Jack Hardesty will be an active and involved council member. Sharry Teague Ashland Hardesty looks to the future Jack Hardesty has the kind of vision needed on the city council. He wantsto plan for the city's future, 10 or 20 years from now. He has the imagination, persistence and skill to see that we do it. My association with Jack has shown me that he knows how to work effectively with diverse groups and that he is savvy about how the city operates. A few years ago, we both became interested in the problem of city-imposed Local Improvement Districts (LIDs). My interest was because of the impact it would have on my neighborhood; Jack's interest because he saw the LID process as unfair to all homeowners. Jack played a major role in bringing several neighborhood groups together, and negotiating with the city to put a "cap" on the amount any homeowner would have to pay for these improvements. Jack's ability to come up with creative solutions to complex problems and to stay focused was impressive. I liked working with him. He was pleasant, insightful, and did his homework. You can be sure that he will listen respectfully to those who testify before the council and work tirelessly for Ashland's citizens. He certainly has my vote.
