Grizz topple Indians By Julie Nelson For The Tidings Ashland High's girls tennis team managed to defeat Roseburg 6-3 despite some tough play and close matches Tuesday in a Southern Oregon Conference dual at Hunter Park. The Grizzlies (3-0 SOC) won three of five singles matches and three of four doubles matches. Ashland's No. 1 doubles team of seniors Justine Bowen-Jones and Jessica Baker topped their Roseburg opponents 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Ashland Daily Tidings/DENISE BARATTA "We had some rough moments but we pulled it together," Bowen-Jones said. Bowen-Jones and Baker have played tennis together since they were 7 years old, although this is their first stint as a doubles team since their freshman year. "We feel this is the best fit for both of us," Baker said. Both progressed to the finals of the district tournament in 2002 - Baker in doubles and Bowen-Jones in singles. "We have enough depth on this team to explore options like this," said Ashland head coach Karl Carstensen. "They need to get sharper, but they are as good as anyone out there." Grizz freshman Kayla Moyse was defeated 6-3, 6-0 in the top singles position by Becky Correll, one of the top-rated singles players in the Pacific Northwest. Moyse could not overcome Correll's strong groundstrokes and consistent play. Carstensen said his team's play against Roseburg was a little sloppy overall, but they managed to persevere. "They fought hard and their efforts paid off," he said. "We were able to close the door and get a big win. I think we're as good as any team up and down the ladder." Boys Tennis One of Ashland High's biggest boys tennis rivalries over the years has been Roseburg, but the Indians were no match for the Grizzlies on Tuesday in Roseburg. The unbeaten Grizz moved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Oregon Conference with a 9-0 drubbing at Stewart Park and the South Umpqua Tennis Club. The match was moved to the latter site due to inclement weather conditions. No Roseburg player managed to win more than two games. "We made all the easy shots, and we served well," Ashland coach Dick Streng said. "We've got a senior-dominated team, and these kids are just playing at a very high level right now." Ashland No. 1 singles player Michael James incorporated tough serving to romp past Joe Lee, 6-0, 6-1. No. 2 singles player Jonathan Willing and No. 3 singles player Shane Lloyd also won handily and remained unbeaten on the season.
