Hiroshima & Nagasaki Commemoration: This year’s Aug. 6-9 remembrance of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will feature presentations by Greg Boertje-Obed, one of three nuclear disarmament activists. The observance will begin on Aug. 6 with a ceremony at the entrance of Lithia Park in Ashland. People will gather at 8 a.m. At 8:15 a.m., the same time the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a gong will sound. Ashland elected to become a nuclear free zone in 1982. Traditionally its mayor reads a proclamation at the ceremony. Boertje-Obed will talk informally with anyone interested in civil disobedience as a strategy for social change at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, in the Adam’s Room of the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave. At 3 p.m. on Sunday in the library’s Community Room he will speak about our nation’s continuing commitment to nuclear weapons and how we must respond. He’ll make a similar presentation at 1 p.m. on Monday in the Meese Auditorium at SOU’s Hannon Library. Lizabeth Rogers, co-maker of the film “Hot Water,” will be on hand for the screenings of her film at 7 p.m. on Sunday in the Medford Library and at 3 p.m. Monday in the Hannon library.
