LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May1 DailyTidings.com Writer Posted May. 1, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted May. 1, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Arming our future enemies Chris Honoré asks the logical question of why Washington is so focused on “Iran and that country’s ability to develop nuclear weapons,” while there is little attention paid to Pakistan’s huge and “fastest-growing nuclear arsenal in the world.” One answer might be that someone might remember the embarrassing fact that we helped put it there. Yes, in 1953, having recently witnessed how devastating the bomb had been in Japan and having government reports (Acheson-Lilienthal) at the time stating that the “development of atomic energy for peaceful purposes and the development of atomic energy for bombs are in much of their course interchangeable and interdependent,” President Eisenhower decided to not only release our secret technology to the world, but to actually supply equipment and build Pakistan’s first nuclear reactors. They were built under the direction of American Machine and Foundry (AMF). An unstable Pakistan with nuclear weapons is as dangerous as Iran with nuclear capabilities. At least Iran is willing to negotiate. Barry Thalden Ashland For the love of trees Please allow the huge old cottonwood on Clay Street to remain standing. Its bright and shiny new leaves are proof that it is not only alive, but thriving. This magnificent tree does not have to disappear to accommodate affordable housing. The units could be build around the tree. Better yet, the empty grassy area in front of the existing housing could be used. Must the old always be sacrificed upon the altar of the new for the sake of change? This concept is so often a waste of energy and precious resources, and an agent of so much needless destruction. I am puzzled as to why a "Tree of the Year" choice would end up on the chopping block a year or two after such a designation. I also wonder why a town that calls itself a Tree City as well as a Bee City continues to fell so many old-growth trees, and allows the use of lethal pesticides — fatal to delicate pollinators and harmful to all life forms. If we talk the talk, we must walk the walk, otherwise such labels are mere hypocrisy. Nicole Twining Ashland Senator Wyden and Earth Day Sen. Ron Wyden, capitalizing on Earth Day, sent an email to constituents that attempted to peel his liberal base away from their anti-Trans Pacific Partnership and fast track stances. It’s an old ploy, using a “wedge issue” to divide and conquer. Wyden touted the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill as requiring partners (the U.S. and 12 Pacific Rim countries, excluding China) to maintain “core” labor standards and environmental protections. The bill addresses illegal wildlife trafficking, wetlands protection, marine pollution, illegal fishing and logging and cuts tariffs on environmental goods, “from solar panels to smog detectors.” Gosh, what’s not to like? Maybe the fact that the TPP will benefit Big Pharma, Big Finance and Big Agriculture while continuing to outsource U.S. jobs? Or maybe, as Mark Bittman recently stated in the New York Times: “It’s a blatant attack on labor, farmers, food safety, public health and even national sovereignty.” The TPP, simply put, is the continuing multi-national power-grab masquerading as another “free-trade” agreement. Its crown jewel is corporate sovereignty via the right to challenge a nation’s sovereign, domestic regulations and sue (in special “tribunal” courts) to seek compensation. (One example: Phillip Morris is currently suing Uruguay over their anti-smoking laws.) TPP would ensure the colonization of national economies by global corporations and financiers. In Wyden’s defense, he does mention a job benefit to Oregon for manufacturers of environmental goods and, if my research is correct, this amounts to less than 300 employees.
