Ashland board and staff would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the community support this winter. Thanks to the new snow, we re-opened the ski area and have been overwhelmed with positive comments and support. We hope to see you this coming weekend. Snow conditions are great with a 27 to 56-inch base. We are thrilled to have added public transportation this season. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the Mt. Ashland Ski Hopper offers roundtrip service to Medford, Phoenix and Ashland. Visit our website at mtashland.com for more details. Many of you have expressed interest in Mt. Ashland pursuing a plan for operating in the summer. We have begun collaboration with the Forest Service to create a plan that considers all of your suggestions — while also protecting Mt. Lisa Beam, Ashland What we must do The science and math are clear: 1. We humans must keep global temperatures below an increase of 2 degrees centigrade or risk global devastation. 2. We will exceed the 2 degree limit in less than 20 years if we do not change our ways. 3. Carbon dioxide, methane and other human-induced emissions in the atmosphere promote global warming. 4. If humans have a future on this planet, it will be a future free from these polluting emissions. Future generations beckon us to a cleaner, more caring world. They beckon each of us to join with others who yearn for and are working toward this more humane world. But how do we do it? We can educate ourselves and one another; we can contact our representatives in Salem and insist they vote against fracking and the transport of coal and natural gas across our beloved state. We can tell them to reject the Jordan Cove / Pacific Connector Project. If you care about future generations, please contact your legislators to express both support for the bills and opposition to the Jordan Cove Proposal. Hallett, Ashland Water argument specious Some folks who oppose the Welcome Center cite increased water consumption as a reason to resist its construction. Although I too believe wise water use should be on everyone’s minds, this argument seems specious to me. I don’t think the presence of the Welcome Center will have any bearing on the number of travelers on I-5, and these motorists must stop at some point along their journey through Northern California and Southern Oregon, a stop that will be sure to include flushing a toilet and washing hands.  If travelers don’t stop and use water in Ashland, they will nevertheless use water somewhere along I-5.  Are water shortages within the Bear Creek Watershed more important than those within the Upper Sacramento or Rogue River watersheds? I am confident that our elected leaders will oversee the installment of drought-tolerant landscaping, in keeping with the city of Ashland’s “think globally, act locally” ideals.  Claire House, Ashland Vote no on pot tax I have never used or produced marijuana, but I don’t care if others do so responsibly. The 25 percent tax authorized by county measure 15-133 is so high as to be more a matter of control than of raising revenue, and seems likely to encourage a black market. It is also retroactive, which is unjust. I therefore expect to vote against it.
