LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Dec. 17 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Dec. 17, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Dec. 17, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Don't create urban canyon  In September I sent the following to the editor of the Daily Tidings regarding "urban canyon effect" created by the new and proposed building on Lithia Way: Although the City Council is only making a decision about height of buildings, I feel that my statements are relevant: Kistler, Small and White, architects, have created an urban canyon effect with their new building on Lithia between First and Pioneer ... If the building on the south side of Lithia is also going to be built right up to the sidewalk line ... If I was Paul Goldberger, architecture critic of the New York Times, I would criticize them for creating an urban canyon effect ... which is really not what Ashland is all about. Even New York has setback limits. I am not sure if these buildings were lower would we have the same effect, but it's worth thinking about, and I hope the council does not make a decision about height immediately. And I agree with the letter written by Roy Laird published on Dec. 16. Do we really want to add $750,000 residences to our town? I feel the opposite: We need to create housing for younger working families as well as those with much smaller pocketbooks. Wendy Eppinger, Ashland Torture reports Recent "Torture reports" in the Daily Tidings have refreshed my recall of a post-9/11 directive by George W. Bush to his attorney general, who was tasked to research the Geneva Convention articles regarding torture. Bush needed to know the bounds of "enhanced interrogation" — how much pain could be inflicted on prisoners within the articles. George W. Bush, having been born into a family of great comfort and security, did not know that his prisoners would lie to avoid the anguish — and lie they did. He allowed this heinous torture under the guise of acquiring secret information and thus protecting the American people. (Note: As Americans we should be pleased that we did not elect him to our office of president: the Electoral College granted him his first term and the Supreme Court awarded him his second term.) Raymond Steinbroner, Talent Donate 'found money' Last week I found a large sum of money at Safeway and turned it into the office hoping that whoever lost it would come to retrieve it. When I was in Safeway this week, I learned no one had claimed it yet so asked if it could be donated to a local charity if indeed no one comes to claim it. I was informed that company policy requires it to be deposited into Safeway’s account as found money and Safeway keeps it. I find this policy an unacceptable way to deal with money that someone has lost or found and Safeway has not earned, so am writing this letter to make the community aware of this policy and urge Safeway to donate this money to a worthy cause.
