I would like it understood that I have never endorsed Mr. Hardesty's candidacy for city council, nor do I intend to do so in the future. William Bloodgood Ashland Calling a lie by any other name How unfortunate that Mr. Mandell doesn't know when he's being lied to or being mislead. After being force fed 237 misleading statements, when will one wake up to the fact that he's being lied to? His statement that "the word misleading is patently dwarfed by the emotion evoked by lie" is ludicrous. Read the definition found in the Webster's Dictionary as follows: Mislead: to lie in a wrong direction, lead astray; to deceive: the act of representing what is not true; delude; mislead; to lie: to make a statement that one knows is false, especially with intent to deceive. b) to make such statements habitually (237 times). As far as I am concerned, all of these 237 lies emanated from Bush and his cohorts, and I hold him responsible for them all. He himself made 55 fallacious statements about the threat posed by Iraq in 27 separate statements, and continues to indoctrinate the American public with his smoke and mirrors of distortions. Touting his purported accomplishments "on my watch" we should all demand that he also be held responsible for the lies that have lead to devastation and deaths of 1,000 servicemen and women. Finally, while reluctantly admitting that there was no connection between 911 and Iraq, he continues to avoid this issue, so much so that this lie remains embedded in the consciousness of 50 percent of gullible Americans. This has been and continues to be a deliberate, obvious, ongoing agenda to misrepresent reality to mislead, deceive, and yes, Lie. Al Bodin Ashland Clinton's troubles a wake up call Former president Clinton's coronary bypass surgery should be a wake-up call for the millions of Americans whose chosen lifestyles elevate their risk of heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, more than 60 million Americans suffer from heart disease and nearly 500,000 die each year. The lifestyle risk factors are a diet high in saturated fats and cholesterol, smoking, and lack of exercise. Scores of studies in the past three decades demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt that replacing animal fat and meat in our diet with vegetables, fresh fruits, and whole grains lowers substantially the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. These diseases account for 1.3 million American deaths annually. A plant-based diet contains no cholesterol or saturated fat, but ample fiber, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients for a long and healthy life. Choosing a wholesome plant-based diet is a snap these days. Every supermarket carries a rich variety of veggie burgers, soy dogs, soy-based lunch "meats," microwave-ready dinners, dairy-free ice cream and a huge selection of vegetables and fruits. All we need is the will to live. Allen Thiel Ashland Protesters show vast discontent Why didn't we see more stories about the 500,000 nonviolent protesters in NYC? Surely, it is a bigger story than the advertising campaign that was the Republican National Convention. We already knew what would be said inside: 9/11 changed the world and George gave good heart on 9/13. But what was said outside the convention is far more varied and interesting. It's too easy to believe the demonstrators were "just" Democrats. They were hard-working Americans from every walk of life, demonstrating their frustration in non-violence and seriousness. This is not about Republicans; it is about the incompetence of the present administration, and the failure also of American media to present us with the information that we need to make good choices. Those choices have to be based on facts - not beliefs. The fact was last week half a million people took time off work to express their concern and dismay about the direction America is headed. The media should have told us why.
