Despite cold and windy conditions at the Richland (Wash.) Playfields, the Raiders sandwiched a 9-1 romp against Northwest Nazarene between wins against Cascade Conference rivals Albertson (3-0) and Eastern Oregon (3-2). "There are a lot of things we need to work on, but we also did a lot of good things today," Binney said. "Winning a couple of close games took some of the bite out of the howling wind." Junior Miranda Gillaspie opened the season with a brilliant complete-game, two-hit, 84-pitch shutout of the Coyotes. Senior designated hitter Alexis Cooper drove in two runs and accounted for one of the team's three hits. Sophomore hurler Amanda Cregan tossed a three-hitter in the five-inning triumph against NNU and recorded her first career complete-game in the process. Meanwhile, junior all-star outfielders Seanna Doyel (3-for-4) and Haley Varley (2-for-3) each recorded a pair of RBIs in an 11-hit attack. Freshman Megan Beugli allowed only six hits and two runs in earning the victory against EOU, and Gillaspie threw two hitless innings to post the school's first-ever save. SOU trailed 2-1 until Megan Rock and Amy Williams drove in the tying and game-winning runs, respectively, in the top of the fifth inning. Binney said Cregan will start tomorrow morning when Southern faces top-ranked and defending NAIA champion Simon Fraser, and Gillaspie is expected to face NCAA Div. I foe Utah Valley State later in the day. The three-day, 14-team tourney culminates Sunday with championship bracket play. SOU would clinch a spot in the semifinals with one Saturday victory.
