We recently read that $100,000 has been allocated for pond improvement by the Ashland Parks and Recreation department. Since the ponds are so visible, we can only hang our heads in shame or steer our out-of-town visitors away from the ponds. When will the green mess go away? Bruce and Barbara Hanson Ashland Foundation receives thanks I write to express my thanks, publicly, to the Carpenter Foundation. Powered by the Carpenter family with Jane Carpenter at the helm, this organization has been quietly funding many projects in this community, among them Rogue Rock Learning Center in Talent. Over the past four years, Rogue Rock Learning Center has provided language classes to about 300 different people in small, intimate classes in Talent. People learn Spanish in order to speak with neighbors, co-workers, or clients. Others learn English so that they can navigate in this country they have adopted. People meet others in class. It's all part of making a more caring community where people know each other personally. Behind the scenes is the effort that goes into finding teachers, publicizing the programs, coordinating and managing the whole thing. The Carpenter Foundation has made it possible for RRLC to hire a Director. I would like to thank our outgoing Director, Rebecca Holt of Ashland, who has taken classes to a new standard of achievement. Please welcome Judith Rosario, also of Ashland, who is setting out to form a board and raise community support of this very fine program. It is located in Talent, sponsored by Talent United Methodist Church, and is for people like you. Rogue Rock Learning Center can be reached by calling Judith Rosario at 535-9014 or 941-6357. Alice Knotts Ashland Freedom of nude protest praised Hooray for "NORMAL," and Thank you, Ryan Navickas, Matt Dusek and Kristin Steuk, for your naked protest. It's people like you who make Ashland not just some little conservative town in Southern Oregon that may as well be in Texas. One of the things that draws people to Ashland is the free, liberal expression of self and art. While I'm at it, let me state we all owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Navickas for providing and raising such fine sons (Erick and Ryan) who work countless hours to help save our natural environment, such as forests, water, open space, air and a way of life that is fast disappearing in the headlong race to become a clone of Southern California. I've observed Erick many times sitting patiently through city council meetings waiting for a chance to speak, working within the system to try and preserve the way of life that brings people here in the first place, only to lose out time and again to "progress," the overuse and abuse of our natural resources. Thank you, and please keep on doing what you're doing. Wil Thomson Ashland Comments reveal character The remark by Isaac walker, "The people in a Tel Aviv restaurant suddenly transformed into bits of flesh are complicit" needs to be immortalized and forever associated with this writer. It reveals a depth of extreme malevolence that clearly explains the lies and severe exaggerations that characterize his opinions. Certainly the logic of this statement, that concludes from the premise that even children among the victims are somehow responsible for the plight of the Palestinian Arabs, is indicative of the warped thinking that permeates his slanderous diatribes. Mr. Walker's remark is an obscenity that would cause the skin of decent people to crawl. If you are ever tempted to read his letters and your intelligence does not restrain you, perhaps nausea will.
