OSU opens its 2015 campaign today at noon Pacific Time against Northwestern in Surprise, Arizona. The Beavers, who were picked fifth in the Pac-12's coaches' media poll, figure tolean heavily on a highly touted freshman class after seven players signed with major league clubs last summer. 1. Will the Beavers snap their NCAA tournament run? OSU is past rebuilding projects. At this point, it simply reloads. But can the most inexperienced roster of the Pat Casey era make its seventh straight NCAA tournament? It will need unheralded pieces to shoulder heavy loads. Outside of center fielder Jeff Hendrix, no current Beaver is a proven offensive weapon. Returners Trever Morrison, Caleb Hamilton and Logan Ice had their moments last year, but largely started for defensive purposes. Other than junior right-hander Andrew Moore, the pitching staff will feature newcomers and returners settling into much-expanded roles. For many programs, it's a recipe for a moribund campaign. But depth and a highly touted freshman class give the Beavers optimism. D1Baseball.com projects OSU to be the No. 3 seed in the Houston Regional this year. 2. Who will comprise the meat of OSU's lineup next season? Last season, outfielders Michael Conforto and Dylan Davis were the core of arguably the most dynamic lineup in college baseball. The duo totaled 120 RBIs, 14 home runs and 85 runs in 2014. As of media day last month, Casey still wasn't sure exactly how he planned to replace Conforto and Davis in the lineup. It depends on what OSU decides to do with Hendrix, a preseason All-American who could lead off for the second straight year or bat third. Whether or not Hendrix hits at the top of the order, Casey will lean on a committee approach to make up for his two former stalwarts' production. Sweet-hitting freshman catcher KJ Harrison, who can fill in at first base as well, should bat in the heart of the lineup. Junior Gabe Clark and freshman outfielder Elliott Cary are two other possibilities there. 3. Who will emerge as a clubhouse leader? The Beavers had plenty of leadership in 2014. When OSU experienced adversity, Ben Wetzler, Conforto or Davis typically called a players-only meeting. The team tended to respond with improved play. This year, Casey is asking Moore and Hendrix to assert themselves as vocal leaders. It's quite the task considering both players are introverts by nature. Moore and Hendrix, always leadership-by-example guys, worked on becoming more assertive in fall and winter workouts. Their ability to translate that into the regular season will be crucial. With a tough nonconference slate, OSU may need leaders to help calm choppy waters in coming weeks.
