Siskiyou Project rolls out two dozen documentaries playing for three days during its Fourth Annual Environmental Film Festival that starts Friday. Siskiyou Project will host the 4th annual Siskiyou Environmental Film Festival Feb. 18-20, with two dozen documentaries illustrating the many roles of humanity on Earth. The festival will include two dozen documentaries which will be screened for three afternoons and evenings, with many filmmakers on hand for discussions. A special kids' session Saturday afternoon features the Southern Oregon premiere of "Go Further," which documents comedian Woody Harrelson on his eco-consciousness-raising tour down the Pacific Coast Highway. An expanding band of independent filmmakers now cover the planet, videotaping the challenges facing Earth's diversity of life. Documented in the films, their stories show people of all ages working together for solutions and more sustainable ways of living, according to event organizers. Highlights from the three-day schedule include: o "Common Ground, Oregon's Oceans" - Greenfire Productions' rare underwater footage off the Oregon Coast and a story that weaves marine science with perspectives from those who rely on the ocean for their livelihood. o "Last Journey for the Leatherback" - Footage of the life cycles of leatherback sea turtles and the fight to protect them from longline fishing practices. Leatherbacks are the largest sea turtle, measuring up to nine feet long and 2,000 pounds o "Siskiyou Wild Rivers: Proposal for a National Conservation Area" - A multi-media presentation by Rolf Skar, Campaign Director for Siskiyou Project. o "Rainwolves" - A story about the North American wolf's resurgence. o "Walking Across Cuba" - The tale of a journey by John Francis of Planetwalk. Francis will make a presentation and play banjo after the Saturday afternoon screening. On Saturday night Amoroq Weiss of Defenders of Wildlife and filmmaker Vanessa Renwick will present on "Wolf-Prey Dynamics and Conservation," followed by Pat Patteson's RVTV Community Access segment, "Siskiyou Wild Rivers," featuring Dominick DellaSala of World Wildlife Fund. Other locally produced mini-documentaries about the Klamath-Siskiyou region include Steve Ryan's "Blue = Cut, the Untold Biscuit Story" and "Black Mountain, A Living Legacy in the Siskiyous," produced for the Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center by Tim Lewis. Sam Stroich's film, "Salmon on the Backs of Buffalo," describes a coalition of Klamath River tribes working to restore water to the river and bring back the Klamath's the once-abundant salmon. The Saturday evening reception is coordinated by Chef Marilyn Moore, and Pacific Power Blue Sky will generate renewable energy for the event. Festival co-sponsors will host information tables on behalf of Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center, Headwaters, Siskiyou Field Institute, Defenders of Wildlife, World Wildlife Fund, Ecology Center of the Siskiyous, and the Media Collective.
