--> --> Light-hitting Petrick does in Giants DENVER (AP) - Mired in a season-long funk that included a stint in the minors, Ben Petrick shrugged off his .220 batting average and delivered a key hit. Petrick, pinch-hitting in the 12th, singled home the winning run as the Colorado Rockies, despite allowing Barry Bonds to reach base six times, beat the San Francisco Giants 3-2 Friday night. Bonds, leading the majors with 60 home runs, went 3-for-3 with three walks. He hit a tying double in the eighth inning. With 20 games remaining, Bonds needs 10 homers to tie the record of 70 set by Mark McGwire in 1998. The Giants dropped a half-game behind Los Angeles in the NL wild card race. Brent Butler opened the Rockies' 12th with a walk off Tim Worrell (2-3) and was sacrificed to second. Aaron Fultz relieved and promptly threw a wild pitch, allowing Butler to reach third. Petrick, on a 3-2 pitch, followed with a sharp single to center. "Once we got Butler to third, I just wanted to put the ball in play," Petrick said. "I've been working on trying to see the ball as well as I can and putting a good swing on it. "I've felt pretty good the last couple of weeks swinging the bat. I'm just trying to keep it as simple as possible, just see the ball and hit the ball. I get in trouble when I start thinking, `Is he going to throw me this pitch here or that pitch there?"' Dan Miceli (2-5) faced one batter to earn the win. The Giants threatened in the 11th, loading the bases with one out against Jay Powell. But pinch-hitter Damon Minor grounded into a double play. Bonds walked in his first at-bat, then had a pair of singles. His double into the left-field corner scored Rich Aurilia, who had walked. Bonds walked again in the 10th and 12th. Larry Walker and Todd Helton drove in runs, and Shawn Chacon pitched seven strong innings for the Rockies. "Shawn had great stuff again tonight against a good, veteran lineup," Rockies manager Buddy Bell said. Giants manager Dusty Baker said his team "had some opportunities to win it, and they made some key pitches and key plays. That was a real tough loss." In the top of the ninth, a storm front blew through Coors Field, creating blustery conditions that likely blew Marvin Benard's potential two-run homer back into the field for a long fly out instead. "We got beat by the elements there," Baker said. "Marvin's ball was a home run, no doubt." Benard said he "hit it good enough for it to go out. I just hit it at the wrong time. On the replay, (right fielder) Larry Walker turned around and looked at the stands, then looked up and realized he had a chance to catch it. It was blowing pretty hard. I don't even think it made it to the warning track." Bonds was concerned about a short turnaround from the game, which ended at about 11 p.m., and a 1 p.m. game on Saturday. "We have to get out of here and get some sleep," he said. "I think our series with Arizona took a lot of wind out of us. We have to get some rest and try again tomorrow." Mariners 10, Orioles 1 Bret Boone set an AL record for home runs by a second baseman, Paul Abbott (15-3) pitched two-hit ball for eight innings and Seattle (101-40) reduced its magic number for winning the AL West to five. Visiting Baltimore lost its sixth straight and for the 12th time in 13 games. Jose Mercedes (7-17) lost his fourth consecutive start and is tied with San Diego's Bobby Jones for the most losses in the majors this season. Athletics 9, Devil Rays 3 Eric Chavez, Johnny Damon and Greg Myers hit two-run homers and Oakland extended its AL wild card lead to 11 games over Boston and Minnesota. Jermaine Dye added a solo homer for Oakland, which has won five straight and 11 of its last 12. Erik Hiljus (3-0) allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. Bryan Rekar (1-13) gave up five runs and five hits - three of them homers - in 4 2-3 innings for visiting Tampa Bay. Email your...
