Crater blitzed Ashland in its own building Tuesday, outscoring the Grizzlies 20-3 in the opening quarter and 34-6 in the first half before Ashland rallied to make the final margin more presentable but still lopsided, 51-33, at Mountain Avenue Gym. Crater’s Cheyenne Scott scored the first eight points of the game and finished with 11, and Courtney Setzer added 12 points and nine boards for the Midwest League-leading Comets. The Grizzlies, led by Georgia Williams and freshman post Alex Crane, outscored the Comets 27-17 after the break but were too far behind to threaten the visitors. Williams had 11 points and four rebounds and Crane six boards for the Grizzlies (7-11, 0-8 MWL), who have been held to 34 points or less in three of their last four games. “At halftime, I said, ‘I challenge you to step outside your comfort zone and to take chances and go a little harder than you think you can,’” Hafner said. “They responded really well.” Hafner said Ashland cranked up its aggressiveness in the second half and proved that it may be capable of challenging a team as good as Crater (18-1, 8-0), but only if the Grizzlies’ intensity remains constant. “I know it sounds simple,” she said, “but after not taking shots in the first half we were taking them in the second half confidently and knocking them down. And we weren’t really even fouling in the first half, but in the second half we were contesting every shot and not giving up any easy shots without contesting or fouling.” Hafner credited Crane with raising Ashland’s energy level. “She had six rebounds against girls who were way bigger, stronger and faster than her,” Hafner said of Crane. “She played so hard. She’s just a little bundle of energy.” Michaela Dunn added seven points for Ashland, which has lost seven in a row since beating Cascade Christian on Jan. 10. The Grizzlies have three more chances to avoid a winless first season in the MWL starting Friday against Springfield. The odds are stacked heavily against Ashland qualifying for the Class 5A state playoffs, but Hafner says winning at least one league game is at the top of her priority list. “It’s of the utmost importance to me,” she said, “because everything I’ve talked about needs to be solidified on the court. They need to see it come to fruition and the only way they can see that is to play four quarters and put together a win.” CRATER (51) — Gavin 3, Bascom 3, Fahndrich 10, Bean 0, E. Boys Basketball Gunnar Asher hit all four of his 3-point attempts in the first half to help Crater build a 33-18 lead en route to a 59-41 win over Ashland in Midwestern League action Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym. Collin Malcolm paced Ashland (9-9, 3-6 MWL) with 19 points, while Malik Pippa added eight. Asher finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Comets (13-6, 5-3), who lost to the Grizzlies in the first head-to-head meeting. CRATER (59) — Reyes 15, A. JV result — Ashland won Men’s Basketball At Eugene, Jordan West had 22 points and nine rebounds and Tim Weber dished out 15 assists as 19th-ranked Southern Oregon crushed New Hope Christian 98-59 on Tuesday. Eric Thompson added 20 points and seven rebounds and Joel Spear 12 points for the Raiders (21-6), who host Oregon Tech on Saturday. Jordan Browne-Moore added seven points and eight boards off the Raider bench. The Deacons (4-22) let a 19-13 lead slip away in a hurry, shooting 4 of 23 from long range after hitting their first five 3-point attempts. Women’s Basketball At Eugene, hours after jumping three spots to No. 10 in the NAIA Division II coaches’ poll Southern Oregon pummeled New Hope Christian 89-57 in a nonleague game Tuesday. Sophomore guard Tiani Bradford had season highs in points (14), assists (seven) and rebounds (six) and Carly Meister scored 19 points as the Raiders improved to 22-3 overall heading into Saturday’s game against Oregon Tech. Ashley Claussen added 10 points and six assists, Courtney West 12 points and six boards and Kristen Schoenherr nine points and four boards for SOU, which has won 10 of its last 11.
