Bicycle racing is hardly a new sport, of course, but it has not been one traditionally offered by high schools. To do it seriously requires a serious investment — racing bikes can run into the several thousands of dollars — and there are safety issues as well. Cyclists can reach high speeds, especially on road courses, and training puts athletes in close proximity to cars and trucks, so insurance is another barrier. South State Cycling has taken on all those challenges, and Ashland High School's cycling team is the beneficiary. But organizers aren't stopping there. Their vision is a regional team incorporating riders from seven Rogue Valley high schools. The enthusiasm of club organizers to share their love of the sport with young people is reminiscent of the early days of the Rogue Valley Soccer Club, with adult soccer players organizing teams and matches for kids. Today, every local high school has soccer teams for boys and girls. For now, a valleywide bicycle racing team is a great start. Maybe one day, local schools will field their own teams, but support from a well-organized nonprofit club should build interest in a healthy pursuit that takes advantage of Southern Oregon's cycle-friendly climate.
