It last had water in it in 2008 after the last of several unsuccessful attempts to patch the leaks. While the city owns the property, it’s controlled by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival under terms of a long-term lease. The festival is going through a conditional use permit to put a food concession with tables and chairs in the square, including the area formerly occupied by the fountain. Black hopes the city will be able to reuse some of the marble removed from the site. “I do think will be able to use them in the future,” he said. “We don’t have a spot yet, but have all of the pieces in storage ... (and) will use them when we find the right place for them.” The estimated cost to repair the fountain again was about $90,000. The estimated cost to move it intact was slightly more than $100,000.
